Kumonicator of Fairfield and Steeplechase | June 2010 | |
Greetings!
Summer is here! What a wonderful opportunity! Most of your children's classmates are not taking time to keep their brains active, but with only 15 to 20 minutes per day of Kumon exercise, your child will be in a tremendous position come fall. And they will still have lots of time to play and have fun and go on vacations this summer. Each fall I have several students come back to me, so excited! They report how easy they find school this year. They know it's because they kept working their brain all summer. I wish I could bottle that joy and pass it out to all the kids I know. I look forward to helping your student over the summer to achieve his or her goals! |

A Cost-Benefit Analysis?
Benefits of Kumon are many, particularly in the area of character traits such as self-confidence, discipline, joy, and goal setting. But recently I had a parent ask me about a cold, hard, cost-benefit analysis of why their child should do Kumon. Here's a stab at it.
Recent Houston Chronicle headlines indicate that somewhere between 40% and 60% of college-bound Texas high school graduates must take at least one remedial course in college. If, without Kumon, your child would have to do so, but Kumon allows the student to take one less semester of college, the benefits realized are not just the saved cost of college for that semester (let's call it $10,000), but also the income for the semester that s/he is in the work force (Let's call it $20,000 for one semester). Thus, there is a pretty good shot that entering Kumon and staying for the long term could be a decision saving $30,000 in today's dollars.
What is the cost of Kumon? Again, dealing in today's dollars, it's $1500 per year per subject, or $3000 per year for two. Simplifying the calculation by ignoring inflation and dealing in today's dollars, your breakeven point is ten years of Kumon. The good news is that even the littlest ones (three years old) coming to me are projected to complete the Reading in eight years or less and the Math in ten. Most children complete much earlier.
Another case is that of the truly advanced child, such as those who come to me at three and stay. These children actually can complete many credits of college before completing high school. Again, the benefits will be a saved semester or more, valued at $30,000 savings per semester.
I know this analysis is simplistic; it is also conservative. It ignores the improved chances for high SAT scores, better high school grades, and admission to a good university. It also neglects the cost differential between lower and higher paying careers. Consider, for example, that the difference in lifetime earnings between a teacher and an engineer is millions of dollars. If Kumon could be the difference for your child, it certainly more than justifies the expense.
These are just cold, hard numbers. What this analysis does not take into account is the child's increased joy of learning, and desire to learn more, that comes as a natural outgrowth of proceeding through the Program. The self-confidence developed through Kumon simply cannot be bought in a store; the only way a child can acquire it is through positive life experiences. Kumon's unique structure, allowing daily small successes, is unique in fostering the self-confidence that produces a truly happy child and ultimately an adult with a strong work ethic and the focus and discipline to be a highly productive and valued employee.
Can you afford Kumon? Really, the question should be: Can you afford NOT to do Kumon? I honestly feel it is the single best investment you can make in your child's future. |
Come Join Kumon of Fairfield and Kumon Steeplechase on Facebook!
Now it's not just Kumon North America who has a Facebook page; we have our own as well. Come join us on line1 We don't have many fans yet but I'd like to have enough of you on there that we can have questions and answers, information about events, and discussions about areas you're struggling with in your child's Kumon (like the long division in Level D). This can be a great support group because no matter what you're dealing with, there is almost certainly another family in one of our Centers who has dealt with the same thing. Come join the fun!

Parent/Student/Instructor Conferences are Coming in June! Plan to take the time to meet with me, even right now. Let's discuss your child's progress so far, and set some goals. I have decidedd to keep both Centers open the week of June 20 because people are doing so well with setting the online Parent Meetings with me I don't think it will be necessary. However, during that week only I will deviate from my normal rule about not meeting with parents during class and will meet with parents in the Oral Reading area. I look forward to discussing your child's progress and goals! You can now book appointments right now online. Simply click here to go to our online scheduling. Select whether you want to mee at Fairfield or at Steeplechase (along the left side), then choose your date and time. Please do enter your email address; the software will then send you an immediate reminder, as well as a reminder the day before your conference. IF YOU CANNOT MAKE YOUR SCHEDULED CONFERENCE, kindly cancel it so someone else can take your slot. A convenient cancellation link is included in your email. This kind of communication is critical for ensuring the efficient progress of ALL our students. Please do make every effort to attend one of these sessions: it should more than pay for itself by virtue of the increased efficiency realized in their lesson planning. |
Summer: A Great Time to Add a Second Subject!
Generally I encourage parents to start their children in just one subject: the second subject can always be added later. Summer is usually a logical time to do so, as the school workload has dropped out and this gives your student the summer to adjust to the added workload. Usually maintaining the two subject pace, once you're used to it, is not hard when students go back to school in the fall.
Kumon studies have established that there is a synergistic effect between the Math and the Reading programs: that those students enrolled in both achieve substantially higher academic rewards.
If you'd like to add the second subject, simply work with our blue shirted staff. |
Summer: A Great Time to Modify Lesson Plans!
Motivated students can make great progress this summer.
One of the reasons I'm doing parent meetings in June is so we can discuss whether to institute a two month plan of an increased workload to help students, particularly the older ones, make some great forward progress during the summer.
I recommend the increased workload only for those students who are willing. Sometimes the additional work upsets the student and they stop doing Kumon entirely, which completely defeats the purpose. I don't want to burn anyone out and this method, though effective, can lead to a student quitting if not handled carefully.
For those highly motivated students who rise to a challenge and recognize it is only for two months but it will jet propel them forward in their studies, this is often a great option. I'd like you to discuss it with your student before our parent meetings so we'll know whether to focus time on that option. |

Improve your child's spelling! Daily work, easy start point I know many of you are looking for a tool that will focus specifically on improving your child's spelling. I recommend this book because it offers daily work and an easy start point, just like Kumon! Because of that, it can easily be incorporated into your daily Kumon routine. It offers study techniques and a list of over 5,000 words for their study. To order online through Amazon, click here. Note: this is NOT part of the Kumon Program, it is simply a book I have used with my own children that strongly corresponds to the Kumon routine. I personally think it would be a great plan to incorporate it into your routine at the beginning of summer and maintain it thereafter. |
