mid October 2009 |
|
|
|
| Greetings! |
This year we have had four students complete the Reading Program and one complete the Math Program at Kumon Steeplechase. I am very proud of each of them for their dedication and wanted to share their stories with you.
Those who complete the Reading Program (through Level L) at our Center are awarded a check of $250; Math completers (through Level O) are awarded a check of $500.
Also, watch for our Honor Roll ad on October 29 in the CyFair section of the Houston Chronicle. It's a full page color ad! |
| Dima Sarbei Completed Reading in May 2009 |
Dima Sarbei enrolled in the Reading Program in May of 2006 at the end of his fifth grade year. English is Dima's second language and his parents wanted to make sure he was strong enough in English to be able to leave the ESL classes he was originally slotted for. He now reads English at a college level. He is a ninth grader and continues with us, studying calculus in the Math Program, with a goal of completing that program by the end of 2010. Congratulations, Dima! |
| Varun Upneja Completed Reading in September 2009 |
I love all my Kumon kids but I'm particularly fond of Varun Upneja, an eighth grader. Varun was actually one of my students on my very first class day at Kumon West Road, June 4, 2001. He was a kindergartener then, studying Math. Along the way he stopped Kumon for a couple of years as his family got their Growing Scholars Montessori School up and running, but he returned in January of 2007 to enroll in Reading. It took him only two and a half years to complete the Reading Program and he is still enrolled in Math, studying in Level G, with a target of completing the Math Program in June of 2013.

| Swathi Vodnala Completed Reading in September 2009 |
Swathi Vodnala originally started her Kumon studies with me in October 2003, having just moved to Houston from New York, where she had started Kumon. Although she stopped her studies two years later, she approached her mother after a year and asked if she could return to Kumon because she felt it would help her in school. Upon resuming, it took her only three years to complete the Reading Program. Studying in Level H Math, she is on track to complete that Program as well within the next three years. Way to go, Swathi! |
| Kyle Villanueva Completed Reading in September 2009 |
Kyle Michael Villanueva originally enrolled in Reading in June of 2003, just before starting Kindergarten. He completed the whole Program in September, at the beginning of sixth grade. He is our youngest Program Completer so far this year.
The Villanuevas have made Kumon a family affair: younger brother Keith, a third grader, is studying two years above grade level, and brother Kris, a Kindergartener, was waiting for Kyle to complete so he could enroll in Reading. Fantastic job, Kyle! We will miss you but look forward to watching your brothers grow up with us! |
| Brian Shiau is our First Math Program Completer |
Ninth grader Brian Shiau was looking for a challenge when he enrolled in Kumon just thirteen months ago. He loves Math, and his mother thought he would enjoy learning Math with the Kumon Program. He astonished us with a Level F start point, then continued to set records as he completed Levels F through K in ten sheet sets with no repetition. From Levels L through O he dropped back to five page sets, and has now completed the entire Math Program, all the way through algebra, trigonometry, precalculus, calculus and differential equations. Wow!
Brian recently turned fourteen, the youngest age at which I can hire graders, and of course I was blessed when he agreed to join our staff and share his math gifts with our other students. Welcome, Brian! We are so proud of you!
