July 2009

Greetings!

Summer is in full swing. I'm so proud of all our Kumon students who continue to press on with their studies during the summer, knowing that when school reopens in the fall they will shine in their classes! Please give them an extra hug for me and tell them I am proud of all their hard work.
Watch for school bus ads this fall!

You may know that CFISD is under a particularly severe budget crunch, facing a budget shortfall in the millions of dollars. I am pleased to be living in a school district that takes this challenge head on. As part of its multipronged attack on this problem, CFISD has arranged to allow businesses like Kumon Steeplechase to help. CFISD is selling ads on the sides of their buses (really!) and anticipates this program can earn our school district a million dollars a year. I was honored to be selected to speak on June 18 at the press conference announcing this program. Watch for our signs on three buses this fall. Additionally, if you own (or work for!) a Cy Fair business, please consider directing some of your advertising dollars to help our children's education. Please call Holly Looney at 281.962.4390 for more information, and PLEASE let her know I sent you.

Kumon of Fairfield

I know I haven't been talking much about the progress on Kumon of Fairfield. This is because its original opening was delayed when the landlord, which owned the shopping center at the corner of Mason and Cypresswood, went bankrupt. That property is now in foreclosure, and will not be available for development for at least several more months.

However, I do have exciting news! After a couple of months of negotiation, the owner of Fairfield Market and I have come to an agreement. new fairfield siteThose of you familiar with Fairfield may know this building as the original grocery store in Fairfield. It is located at 15050 Fairfield Village Square Drive and has been unoccupied since a fire put it out of commission about eight to ten years ago. The owner will be breaking it into smaller leasable spaces, and Kumon of Fairfield will be its first retail tenant. The design is complete, we have reached an agreement in principle, and hopefully the build out will commence in mid to late July. The Center will be substantially larger than Kumon of Steeplechase, and world class. There is even a bike rack out front for students who want to ride their bikes to Kumon.I am currently praying for an opening in late August or early September, just in time for the back to school crowd. Class hours will be Mondays and Thursdays from 3:30 to 7:30 p.m. Please be sure to pass this information on to your friends in Cypress, Magnolia, Waller and Hempstead!

The Importance of Home Grading

Your children are so awesome! I am pleased to announce that currently over 75% of our students are studying above grade level, and over 25% are at least two years above grade level. THIS IS LARGELY DUE TO YOUR EFFORTS, ESPECIALLY HOME GRADING.

Don't be fooled: Home grading is the engine that super charges your child's progress. Because we enforce home grading, these statistics dramatically outpace those of all other Centers in our area. Fantastic work, everyone!
Thank you for all you do for your child. I look forward to continuing to work with you!

Sincerely,
