October 2010

There is a season for everything,

a time for giving birth,

a time for dying;

a time for tears,

a time for laughter;

a time for mourning,

a time for dancing . . . .

    -Ecclesiastes, 3:1, 2, 4

Mantey

One of the blessings. . .

of being a parish pastor is to be privileged to be present at critical moments in peoples' lives.  The stepping stones of life are many:  the blessing at the birth of a child, the joy of baptismal waters flowing over someone, the delight at seeing a young person confirm their faith, the deep felt happiness at a wedding, a recovery after a long illness.  Not only have I been privileged to witness the joys of life with you, I also count it a privilege to have walked with you through the sorrows:  the death of a loved one, divorce, illness, the complications that come with aging and dying.  There have been laughter and tears, mourning and dancing, birth and death.

What binds a church community together though is not the pastor.  What binds a community together is the Spirit present in all our lives but most especially as we come together around Word and Sacrament each Sunday morning.  That same Spirit will continue to bind the people of Milwaukie Lutheran together after my departure and into her future as the Word is proclaimed and the Sacraments are offered.

As the time for my departure is coming close, I wish to thank you all for these privileges you have extended to me through the years.  Forgive me for the times I have not been there for you.  I pray for you that the Spirit will continue to empower you for ministry in this neighborhood and in the world.  God's peace be with you.
