A Word from Our Pastor

A Year of Welcomes, and a Year of Partings.  It looks as if this year, 2010, is a year of change for Milwaukie Lutheran. In January we said goodbye to Cheryl Drewes after her ten years of service as Music Director. Then we welcomed Owen James as interim choir director and Gregory Smith as interim pianist. In August we said goodbye to Gregory and sent him on his way to Cornish College of the Arts in Seattle.
In September we welcome Owen James now as our new Choir Director and Contemporary Music Director. I am also delighted to let you know that Kari Liebert will continue as our Bell Choir Director. She is very excited about different ideas she has for our bell choir. In October, we will welcome Maya Story as our new pianist/organist. Maya is married to Owen. Please see the article about them elsewhere in the newsletter. We are in the process of planning a welcome reception for Owen, Maya and Kari on October 3rd, between services. October 3rd will be Maya's first Sunday with us.
Now to some of you who are on the newsletter mailing list but not on our membership mailing list, I have some news. I have decided to accept the call to be pastor at St. Mark Lutheran Church in Salem. My last Sunday at MLC will be October 24th. It seems that there will be yet another parting this year. How-ever, know that with every parting, there has been a welcome to follow. You will be welcoming an interim pastor following my departure. This person will be appointed by Bishop Brauer-Rieke in consultation with the Council.
Goodbyes are very much a part of our lives. We say "hello"; we say "goodbye". Joy and sorrow begin at birth and continue to the day of our death. The word goodbye means "God-be-with-ye" or "Go-with God." It is a recognition that God is a significant part of our parting. When we fear the painful journey of parting,
byes and maybe that's not such a bad thing. Saying goodbye helps us to live deeply, to love deeply and to hope in the One that forever binds us together.
As we move through these last weeks together until our parting, I pray that "God be with ye" in all things, especially in the changes that life brings.
In Christ's love,
Pastor Charles

Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi

Lord, make me an instrument of your peace.
Where there is hatred, let me sow love;
 . . . For it is in giving that we receive;
it is in pardoning that we are pardoned;
and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life. Amen
