A Word from Our Pastor

Companions on the Journey is a vital and renewing force in the life of our congregation.  First, our Lutheran faith values the tradition of the centuries as a foundation on which our church stands.  Because Companions on the Journey is modeled after a process developed by the early church, we become rooted in the life giving Spirit that Christ has provided for his church from its birth.  Second, this process forms people in faith as they live out their Christian lives in prayer, worship, learning and service.  It helps participants make decisions about living faithfully in their daily lives at work, at home, in the community, as citizens, in church and at leisure.  Third, in the two years that we have offered Companions on the Journey at Milwaukie Lutheran Church, we discovered that it works!  People are deeply touched.  Lives are changed.  The congregation is being renewed.  Lastly, Companions on the Journey is a way that includes those brand new to the faith and those who have been around a long time, those baptized and those preparing for baptism, those who want basic Christian formation and those who are seeking a deeper commitment and a closer relationship with God.  For more information on Companions on the Journey...if you would like to take part in the process...or become a faith partner...or help lead, come to the Sunday forum on September 27th at 10:00 a.m.  You can become a part of a renewing tradition at MLC.

Gathering and Scattering

Some of you may remember from years past the tradition of questioning the confirmation students in front of the congregation before they were confirmed.  I remember from personal experience sitting individually before the church council and being asked questions when I was in ninth grade.  That was nerve racking.  One question I don't remember them asking was, "What is the mission of the church?"  I believe that is one of the most important questions we as a church must be able to answer.

The first line of our mission statement is the 4G's sentence.  "Milwaukie Lutheran Church is a gathering and scattering of people, grounded in the love of God, guided by the Holy Spirit, reaching out to share the Good News of Christ Jesus."  If you haven't done so already, take a moment to memorize that first sentence....  Got it?  Good.  Now read on.

We are a gathering and scattering of people.  What does that mean?  God is about gathering.  Just as God gathered the people of Israel together to form them into a faithful people, just as Jesus gathered the disciples together to equip them for faithful ministry, so the Holy Spirit gathers us together so that we may become the church Jesus meant us to be.

Fall is the time we make a big gathering push.  Rally Sunday on September 13th, is the day we kickoff our education ministry for children, teens and adults.  In October, small groups begin.  We have so many gatherings it's hard to name them all.  Bible study gatherings, youth gatherings, social gatherings, work gatherings.  Each have their place.

But gathering is only half of the equation for being the church.  God is about scattering.  Just as God promised Abraham that he would have children as many as the stars, just as Jesus sent out his disciples two by two to do the same things he was doing, so we are called by the Spirit to give of ourselves in ministry at work, at home, at play, at service.  A gardener does not keep the seeds all gathered neatly in their packaging but scatters them in the garden so that new things might grow.
We are a gathering and scattering of people.  Remember these words next time you gather.  In what ways is that group also about the ministry of scattering?

Peace to you,

Pastor Charles
