From the Wilderness to the Garden
Lent is about God guiding us through the wilderness where we have wandered for forty days. Lent is not so much about austerity or sorrow or a period to cultivate guilt. Rather it is a season to sing the joy of forgiveness. Through this little wilderness in which we roam every year, we are on the journey to rediscover the springtime in our lives. We cannot avoid being led through Jerusalem on this journey. The way begins with a parade with palms. The people we journey with are ecstatic that Jesus will finally bring in the kingdom. We quickly discover however that their shouts of acclamation lack something. They are filled with a longing for power and self-preservation. Their shouts fall flat because God's way leads instead to the cross. This is perhaps the most difficult part of this yearly journey. We would rather not look upon someone put on trial unjustly, beaten and nailed to a cross. We would rather skip from the parade to Easter. But of all the invitations given to us during the entire liturgical year, the invitation of this week, this week in which God's own dear Son suffers and dies, is an invitation to forgiveness. On the cross we see God. On the cross we know springtime. At the cross, we must pause on our journey to allow us time to ponder the unsearchable depths of God's love. If you do not have opportunity this season to hear the Passion story, take time to read it. This year we read Mark's account: Mark 14:1 - 15:47. Read it to your family. Holy Week, from Palm/Passion Sunday to Easter, is the time in which we are called to become fluent in this story. It is this story that makes us who we are. From the wilderness of Lent and the promise of the cross, God leads us to the promised land of Easter. The Resurrection of our Lord is a day when the hollow shouts of Palm Sunday's parade are filled with the substantial shouts of "Alleluia! Christ is Risen!" The season of Easter is like a garden where we are refreshed with the fruits of forgiveness and renewed with resurrection power to be about living out God's calling upon our lives in our world. Our journey inward always leads to our journey outward to proclaim the Good News of God's love for all people. May our journey together be an avenue for many people in our neighborhood to share of the fruits of the garden. Shalom, Pastor Charles |

Urgent Needs for Love INC
During the first two months of 2009, calls for assistance to Love INC have doubled and Gap ministries (assistance specialties offered by individual member churches) are stretched to the limits. Visit the Love INC website at www.clackamasloveinc.org for a complete list of items we can use for helping those in need.
The Furniture Warehouse operated by Zoar Lutheran in Canby is in urgent need of beds in twin, double or queen sizes. The Warehouse also provides kitchen supplies. Please call Maggie at the clearinghouse at 503-655-4223 for more detailed information.
Bicycles are needed for adults and kids, along with accessories. This ministry is located at Oregon City Evangelical Church. Please call Gerry Hines at 503-656-0903 or email him at grhines@msn.com.
Clothing and shoes are in short supply at Oregon City Church of the Nazarene Clothes Closet. All sizes of clean, gently used clothes are accepted. There is a greater need for baby and plus size women's clothing. Donations may be dropped off at the church located at 716 Taylor St. in Oregon City on Thursday mornings from 9 to 11. Or bring them to MLC and placed in the red tub marked for Love INC. Thank you.

Ministry News
Backpack Buddie News
We keep getting surprises all the time as financial support comes from many directions - a Bible study group sends in an offering, Glen Hess set up the opportunity for a percentage of your meal from Sweet Tomatoes went to the program, pew envelopes are being used. The red tub fills up with suggested items. Last year, concerts arranged by Cheryl Drewes and Heidi Grevstad had their proceeds go to support BP Buddies. We have even begun to receive a monthly donation because a non-member's daughter attended Milwaukie Elementary as a child and heard about the Buddie program, some downtown businesses in Milwaukie have sent in donations...Many thanks to all! Because of your generosity, we are able to send a $25 grocery gift card to be used at Albertson's to help the need Backpack families buy food during the Spring Break week.
We have been able to help other churches begin a program - for example, Prince of Life in Oregon City. We work with other churches - King of Kings is cooperating with us and participates financially and with volunteers.
There are many others to thank - Volunteers who shop for food, who faithfully appear at 3 p.m. on the first and third Wednesdays of each month to pack the food, the drivers each week and the picker-uppers of the tubs are faithful, dependable workers. Any questions about Backpack Buddies, contact Marilyn Lease through the church office.

Global Mission Committee
On hunger. Beads on our Lenten cross represent 16,000 children who die daily from hunger. A request was sent to Council to sign MLC to a hunger resolution for the Synod Assembly encouraging all Oregon Synod churches to reach a goal of $10 per member by 2010. The Committee is also addressing ways to keep all members informed on local Oregon hunger issues. Letter writing as well as attendance at Salem gatherings will be explained and encouraged.
Fair Trade Sunday. On Mother's Day (Sunday May 10), the Committee offers to sponsor the coffee hour as well as host a forum session on Fair Trade. In conjunction with this, we will apply for a Fair Trade grant from the ELCA. This will help us to add SERVV items for sale as well as Fair Trade coffee. We will also order the firm "from Bean to Bar." Committee members: Ken Zabel, Delores Vilstrup, Marion Rogelstad, Linda Millenbach, Marilyn Lease, and Laura Schroeder. * * *
Worship and Music
"Christ on Trial" continues through Lent and concludes on Good Friday. We thank Laura, Scott, Paul, Shirley, Mike, Sara, and Greg for their willing participation each Wednesday.
The Committee has given a request to Council to approve one Sunday service at 9:30 a.m. beginning May 24. Pentecost is May 31.
The Committee continues to seek helpers to clean-up after communion at the second service. We thank those who have given their time, and ask you to please consider giving a small amount of time occasionally to assist with this important service to our community.

Outreach Ministry Team Ideas that work! Action!
People of faith from communities throughout Oregon are concerned about these issues:
- Ending Hunger for All Oregonians
- Comprehensive Health Care of all Oregonians
- Affordable Housing for all Oregonians
Members of Milwaukie Lutheran...It is up to us, as people of faith, to call upon our legislators to take bold action to prevent a dramatic increase in hunger, homelessness, and poverty during the current economic hard times.
Let your senator or your representative hear from you during this time. There are bills going before the legislative assembly to expand health care for children and low-income adults (HB2009); hunger issues, such as expanding the school lunch program and issues concerning critical human services such as programs for seniors. Other issues such as affordable housing (HB2436) are on the agenda. These issues are being addressed now and it's up to you to let your legislators know your feelings.
Legislators want to hear from you. Letters stating your position are the best. Get on your legislator's email newsletter list - click to Legislative Web Site and use the tab for Senate and House to find your legislator's email.
Check out the bulletin board outside the library. Help yourself to handouts regarding bills to be voted on by the legislature. The white handout will help you find your House and Senate representative for your area. Karen Hicks and Marilyn Lease are co-chairpersons of MLC's Community Outreach Ministry Team and participate in the Lutheran Metro Synod Hunger Leaders' meetings. Information comes to us from the Synod, OFRAH and Bread for the World. Our Community Outreach Ministry Team will meet the first Tuesday in April at 7 p.m. If you are interested in participating in outreach, please join us.

Thank you
Dear Friends at Milwaukie Lutheran Church,
I am writing on behalf of myself and my wife, Jill, to thank you for your support and assistance in bringing my new surgical procedure to fruition. As you may know, I designed and underwent the initial trial of this procedure on 12/16/08. This surgery is a new method of correcting often debilitating rib cage deformities.
The surgery went extremely well. The surgeons were very pleased with the initial results. I am recovering rapidly (much faster and more effectively than from my previous thoracic surgery). I look forward to having the required fixation hardware removed in several months. My doctors and we are eager to see how I do after this removal procedure is completed. I look forward to and pray for a continuing good recovery.
I am pleased that my surgeons are already considering this procedure for future patients. Thank you again. Sincerely, Chris and Jill Lokan ~ ~ ~
Charlie is back safe in Germany. I will update you when he gets shipped out again. Thanks for all the prayers while he was in Israel. -Lana Rulien
