March 2011

Dear Village Member,

The catalyst for Lincoln Park Village was three forward-thinking couples who wanted to stay in the community they love as they grew older.  And now, this community is helping more and more neighbors to do just that. In the process, people are making new friends, learning with and from each other and a robust community of caring is emerging. The new member-to-member website resource offers great promise to link people to each other as does the growing list of Village programs that inform, connect and delight--all are intended to build community.

One of the most important ways we build community is through the quality delivery of services.  The Village's most requested service is transportation, a significant issue in communities everywhere as highlighted by a recent article in the Chicago Tribune (click here to read it), which featured Village member Carole Howard and the services provided by Lincoln Park Village and our sister village, North Shore Village.

Without a dedicated corps of volunteers, we would not be able to fulfill the many requests for transportation--for programs, rehab sessions, appointments, visits to a friend and so much more.  (Just this week, we fulfilled our first request for a ride for a pet when the owner had to go out of town unexpectedly.)

As the Village grows, so does our need for volunteer drivers. Right now, we are seeking additional drivers for regularly scheduled, periodic and last-minute trips.  In addition to getting the member to their destination, drivers sometimes can assist the member to and from the front door of his or her house or apartment, or help carry packages. If you use your own car (and insurance coverage), you can even take a charitable contribution tax deduction for the mileage. These simple acts of kindness make all the difference for those in need of transportation and  often provide good conversations and a helping hand as well.  If you would like to support Village members--often your neighbors--in this way, please contact the office and let us know (click here to download the Volunteer forms).

Volunteer driving is just one of the many ways Village volunteers support the Village through direct service; there is also committee work, governance matters, planning and leading events, writing for this newsletter, helping in the office and so much more. April is National Volunteer Month--and we will be tallying ALL of the hours our valued volunteers devote to the Village for that month. We will report back to you and think we will all be amazed at how many hours our volunteers devote to making the Village the valued connector and community resource it is. It does indeed take a Village....

Fret Your Way to a Long Life

It turns out that some of the assumptions about what contributes to longevity aren't really true. A recently published book, "The Longevity Project," uses data from an 80-year longitudinal study of some 1,500 people to de-bunk some popular myths about longevity.

For example, we've been told that thinking positively and eliminating stress are important ways to lengthen your life.  Well, not really, says the study.   People who are described as extraordinarily cheerful and optimistic and who never worry are less likely to live to an old age.

Who does live long are people who are satisfied with their lives and who understand that worrying is sometimes a good thing.  In fact, many of us will be relieved to learn that "neuroticism is health-protective!"

The authors say that being active in middle age is most important to health and longevity--not the usual 30 minutes of exercise four times a week that you never do--but rather being involved in activities you like and will keep doing, like gardening, walking the dog, going to museums.

Retiring isn't the answer, either, according to the study.  "Continually productive men and women live much longer than their laid-back comrades."  Your Village is always eager to help, so here are some ways you can work on your longevity by being productive--with the added benefit of helping our community!

Volunteers Needed for Lincoln Park High School

This opportunity came up as a result of the efforts of Bob and Melaine Stephens. The principal of Lincoln Park High School has some volunteer needs that may be of interest to Lincoln Park Village members. When the weather warms up, volunteers will be needed to work with students doing plantings in the school's garden. Volunteers are also needed to tutor students in the school's National Honor Society's after-school tutoring program in math, science and language arts and to help edit college-application essays.  In addition, adult chaperones are needed for field trips and dances.  If you are interested, please call Debbie Shepherd in the Village office for more information.

Volunteers Needed for St. Vincent de Paul Center

A number of Village members expressed a desire to volunteer with preschool-aged children in our neighborhood. As a result, we have organized a volunteer project at St. Vincent de Paul Center,

www.svdpc.org, located at 2145 N. Halsted St. The Center's preschool program serves a diverse group of 440 children ages 1 to 5 from low-income working families. It also has after-school tutoring and recreation programs for ages 5 to 13.

For those who prefer to work with older children, afternoon volunteer opportunities with children up to age 13 are available in the Center's after-school tutoring program.  The Center holds orientation sessions on a regular basis. Several Village members have already signed up to volunteer, and openings are still available; volunteers can start at any time. For more information, please contact Melaine or Bob Stephens at 773-348-7553 or melwstephens@hotmail.com

Please consider becoming a part of the Village programs that give back to our community. Remember, "The Longevity Project" tells us if there's a secret to long life, it's living conscientiously and bringing forethought, planning and perseverance to one's life.

Pre-school Kids Need Items from this Wish List

Preschool kid

Village members who have been volunteering weekly at St. Vincent de Paul Center are collecting items on the

Center's Needs and Wish List (click here). In addition, both new and clean, gently used clothing are most welcome. Items can be dropped off directly to Jennifer Blackwell at the St. Vincent De Paul Center, 2145 N. Halsted Street, Chicago (312.943.6776) or at the home of Village members Bob and Melaine Stephens. Please contact them to arrange a drop-off time at

melwstephens@hotmail.com. Bob and Melaine will also provide information about the Village's volunteer effort at the Center.

As explained above, there is still room in this program for more volunteers.

New Feature on Member Website--

"Our Members: Eyewitnesses to History"

If you go to the Knowledge Exchange on our new member-to-member website, you will see this new feature, "Our Members: Eyewitnesses to History."

The first contribution is from Don Rose, who was Dr. Martin Luther King's press secretary in Chicago when the civil rights leader's agenda changed from filing protests against housing discrimination into full-blown freedom marches. He tells us how it happened.

Please share your own eyewitness accounts of history that was made in Chicago.  Were you involved in the 1968 Democratic National Convention riots? Did you see Queen Elizabeth here in 1959? Did you work on the Harold Washington campaign in 1983?  Or were you there when the first subway opened in 1943?

Or maybe you saw history being made somewhere else--in the American South--or in Viet Nam, or Washington, D.C.  We want to hear your story.

Please send your eyewitness accounts of history-in-the-making to website editor Laurel Baer at lbaer938@aol.com.

Spotlight on Services

Have you ever needed help with something and hesitated to call the Village?  Well, don't!  We can help with almost anything.  For example, last month we helped ...

  • organize some bookshelves
  • change a furnace filter
  • arrange food service for a member's mother
  • walk a dog
  • master PowerPoint
  • find a neurologist

If you have a problem or concern, don't hesitate to call the Village.  We will send a volunteer, recommend a provider or direct you to the appropriate trusted resource. If you don't ask, we can't help.  So ask! No matter what.
