Greetings!   Entrepreneurs Just Do It! is rocking along.  Our business plan competition has 18 confirmed participants and the possibility of a handful more.  I've been providing feedback on draft business plans, one time for every participant, prior to the submission deadline of Wednesday, October 17, at noon.

We have four judges for the finalist competition on Wednesday, November 7, and are recruiting a fifth. The panel so far includes Rebekah Helzel, VP at Cutting Edge Capital (Oakland); Rick LeFaivre, Emeritus Partner at OVP Venture Partners (Seattle); Mitch Hollins, past head of Sonnenschein Nath & Rosenthal's private equity practice (Chicago); and Mark Solon, Managing Partner of Highway 12 Ventures (Boise).  The full resume of each of these people (who are familiar to many Valley residents) is too long to even summarize here.  Jigsaw is extremely fortunate to have their enthusiastic participation in our competition.

Please put Wednesday, November 7, 9 am-1 pm, on your calendar and plan to attend the public presentations and judging at the Ketchum Community Library. Entrepreneurs will learn a lot by watching the finalists present, hearing the panelist's questions, and listening to their feedback.  Others in the business community will be surprised, perhaps, by the Valley's extensive and broad-ranging talent; their own innovative thinking might nudged into new directions.  It's a "can't miss" event for all those interested in local economic development!

Meanwhile, next week Sustain Blaine is holding its first annual Economic Development Summit at Sun Valley Resort. The date is Wednesday, October 10, starting a 11 am.  Reservations requested, so check out the link.

Jigsaw regrets the departure of Tully's from our business community.  It was a great gathering place and workspace for many - with friendly service and easy parking.  It was a predictable casualty of allowing Starbucks to gain a highly desirable, Urban- Renewal-Agency-subsidized, location in the center of town.  Just one of several poor URA decisions.

On a happier note, we won't be losing Java Coffee and Cafe in the near future - although it looked like we might after the Starbucks debacle. Todd Rippo will keep his stores open here while he works with restaurateurs and financial supporters to build the Java brand in Connecticut.  The group is looking at five possible high-end locations.  We may not see much of Todd when the project gets going, but his attachment to his flagship Ketchum store is deep and, we hope, unbreakable.

Until next week...Jima Rice

Think On It!

"In the mythology of Silicon Valley, there's no shame attached to starting in the wrong direction, because every failure is just another opportunity for inspiration. The fashionable jargon for this is the term pivot."

Since so much of our economy depends upon housing: prices, sales activity, and equity for entrepreneurial and other investments, I'm posting this encouraging article from Idaho Business Review.

Youth Inventor of the Year

Greyson MacLean founded BrickStix in 2010 in collaboration with his family.  He was 10 at the time, felt a need, used his ingenuity, and now has four product designs with the potential for huge growth.  Here's his story

Getting to Mars

Human ingenuity is a remarkable thing. We are born problem-solvers. It is that native ability, aided by other elements such as the opposable thumb, that has enabled us to adapt to the possibilities presented by an ever-evolving environment. So, for fun and in case you aren't one of the already 10 million+ viewers, here's a YouTube simulation of sending a rover to Mars. Bless our innovative imaginations.
