| Progress on Yarmouth Way
Our close collaboration with Thistle Communities on North Boulder's new Yarmouth Way community continues, with permits underway and a ground breaking expected in the next few weeks.
Coburn has provided an innovative design approach based on Woonerf, a European concept meaning "living streets," where arbored lanes are designed to favor pedestrians, cyclists, and play, over cars. The community is located in the heart of a vibrant North Boulder neighborhood, on the north side of Yarmouth Avenue between 16th and 17th Streets, near restaurants, shops, open space, trails, city parks, schools, and RTD transit lines.
This infill project is located on a parcel of land originally intended for the People's Clinic, and because of its unusual size it offered us a major design challenge. We're excited about how the design has come together, with homes fronting the interior of the development -- creating a unifying space for the neighborhood. Yarmouth Way was designed from the ground up to incorporate green features through and through. The development includes free standing homes, cottages, row homes and duplexes, and includes nine permanently affordable units. For more information, go here. |
New Spot for P.C.'s Pantry
Pet lovers love P.C.'s Pantry - the Boulder local favorite that specializes in bakery, deli, and general store products for dogs and cats. The business began in a cute house at 9th and Walnut, but quickly grew out of that space and into its current home in the Steelyards. Now P.C.'s is growing again, this time just across the way, in a new space on Bluff and 30th Streets. Coburn is proud to be providing architectural design for the new space - converting what was previously a tire store into pet heaven. We'll be working closely with Milo Construction for the build out. Opening is scheduled for early July.

Preparing for Smart Regs
Rental property makes up more than 50% of Boulder's housing stock. In September 2010, the City of Boulder enacted SmartRegs to ensure a high degree of energy efficiency and sustainability in rental housing. In 2019, property owners will need to comply with SmartRegs to be granted a rental license. The City recommends that property owners begin creating improvement reserves and plans now. It is possible to get financial assistance from various agencies at present, and owners may take a prescriptive or performance path to compliance. A phased approach is recommended. For more information on the program, access the City's site here. Additionally, Sustainable City Network had this to say. If we can help you sort through the requirements, please contact us any time.

Meet Coburn's Jill Reilly National Champion Rugby Player By day, Coburn's Jill Reilly spends her time here at Coburn as a designer. By weekend, she plays a mean game of rugby. She and her teammates on the Glendale Raptors just won the national tournament Ruggerfest 2011 in Washington D.C. The Raptors gave up just five points in four matches against Boston's Beantown (43-0), D.C.'s Furies (29-0), Chicago's North Shore (29-5), and tournament host Furies (39-0). Read the full story here. Congratulations Jill! |

People We Admire If there is one person or company who personifies what we're all about, it's Catherine Hunziker of WishGarden Herbs. Catherine lives, works and continues to expand her thriving business all right here, within the Steel Yards. It's just this kind of live-work urbanism that Coburn envisioned when we created Steel Yards. Architect Colorado discusses the vision and evolution of Steel Yards in its Spring issue - read it here.

Congratulations to Emma Coburn, who is making her mark on the record books at CU and beyond! Emma won her second straight Big 12 Outdoor 3,000-meter steeplechase title this month after running the second fastest time in meet history at 9 minutes, 57.39 seconds. Just two weeks before that race, Emma ran a then-U.S. leading mark and personal best time of 9:40.51. During the indoor season Coburn won the Big 12 3,000-meter run in 9:17.46.
