The Frances Walker Community Room Gets a Facelift

This summer brought some changes our classroom space. The Frances Walker Community Room, named in honor of beloved former homebuying counselor Frances L. Walker, got new flooring, and a splash of new bright paint.  We look forward to hosting classes and community events in this great space!

 Partner Event

In June we held a special training for our industry partners who help teach in our HomeBuying101 classes.  It was a great opportunity to connect with our partners, share our outcomes from the last year, and brainstorm ways to better serve first time home buyers.

Greetings!

Welcome to a special end of summer edition of the Portland Housing Center e-newsletter.

What a summer it has been!  In addition to our regular home buyer counseling, education and lending services, this summer we hosted an affordable home tour, held a back-to-school family financial fitness event, and spruced up our classroom space. Another exciting landmark was reaching 3,000 subscribers through our e-newsletter.

We hope you enjoy reading Portland Housing Center highlights from Summer 2010.
Polygon Home Tour

Portland Housing Center partnered with Polygon Homes for a "Sneak Peek Construction Tour." The tour provided a great learning opportunity for prospective home buyers, and highlighted various stages of home construction.  It was also a great chance to see affordable housing options. Thank you to Polygon Homes for helping to create knowledgeable homeowners!

Helping Families Get Back to School and Back to Financial Basics

Portland Housing Center partnered with Champions Barbershop to help families prepare for the school year without "breaking the bank." The August  14th event highlighted low cost options for school supplies and school clothes, and household budgeting tips. Free backpacks and school supplies were given to the first 25 families. There was also a clothing closet, a "thrifty chic" fashion show, and back-to-school hair cuts from our friends at Champions. Thanks to everyone who helped make this event a success, including our sponsors at the  Portland Housing Bureau, our partners at Champions Barbershop, and all of the families that attended!

The Future of Community Development

In August,  a group of 4 and 5 year-olds from the Helen Gordon Child Development Center visited Portland Housing Center to learn more about what we do. The kids had a great visit, and were able to learn more about homeownership and community development.
