Author Mark RobsonTower Hamlets Book Award 2009

The shorlist has now been announced for the Tower Hamlets Book Award 2009 so now is the time to get reading so you can vote for the winner at the end of November.

The shortlist is:

The Savage by David Almond and illustrated by Dave McKean
Take a look at these two websites for information about the author and the illustrator

Life, interrupted by Damian Kelleher
Find more information about this book
here. Damian has just visited some schools in Tower Hamlets and had some very interesting things to say. If he visited your school why not write a short report for the next enewsletter.

Sally has also been visiting schools in Tower Hamlets, so it would be great if you met Sally to write a short report for us too.

Chris is another author that lives in London, you can find out all about him on his website. The first person to email ideastore@towerhamlets.gov.uk with an explanation of why this book is different to the others will win a copy of 'Malice'.

This book is the second in the series of Wimpy Kid books. Jeff Kinney lives in the USA, so I don't think we will get to meet him, but you can find out all about him on the Wimpy Kid website.

Elizabeth has written many books for children and young people and many of them have a strong message. Explore her website for more information.

'Mr. Big' Review and Booktime

In October all of the reception class children in Tower Hamlets will be receiving a free book called 'Mr. Big', we will also be having some 'Mr. Big' activities in the October half term. It is a fantastic book by Ed Vere.

"Poor Mr. Big, he's so big and scary-looking that when he gets on the bus everyone gets off. This makes him unhappy and lonely - no-one sees the real him. One day, he sees an old piano in a shop window; it also looks unhappy and alone, so he buys it. And plays. The notes of Mr. Big's music drift into the crowded city night and everyone is enchanted - who is this wonderful musician? Mr. Big gets invited to join a band and suddenly, in his element, the real Mr. Big shines through. With it's gruff hero, vibrant, strong colours, bold design and spare text, there's a satisfying punchy simplicity and jazzy feel to this story of looking beyond appearances."

Ed Vere has some other great books too and you can read an interview with him here.

All About The Big Draw!

This year is The Big Draws 10th birthday.

The Big Draw is a month-long season of drawing events for people of all ages and abilities. Big Draw events encourage everyone to experiment with pencils, paint, charcoal, sand, clay, digital imagery, choreographed movement, vapour trails and much more.

Big Draw Day is Saturday 10 October, but more than 1000 events will take place throughout October in gallaries, museums, art clubs, heritage and environmental sites, libraries, archives, science, community and shopping centres, colleges and schools across the UK and internationally. There's something for everyone - have fun!

Why not try the shape game which is Anthony Browne's favourite game and demonstrates that everyone can draw.

The first person draws a shape - any shape, it's not supposed to be anything, just a shape. The next person has to change it into something. It's a fantastic game that you can play anywhere when you are bored and it also shows you that everyone can draw.

Anthony Browne is the Children's Laureate and a great illustrator. Gorillas feature in many of Anthony's books; he says, "I am fascinated by them and the contrast they represent - their huge strength and gentleness. They're thought of as being very fierce creatures and they're not." Anthony's illustrations also reveal his love of the Surrealist painters whose pictures often depict strange, dreamlike scenes (look out for all the disguised bananas hidden in Anthony's books!). When Anthony first has an idea for a picture book, he says: "It's a strange combination of story and images. Deciding what will be illustrated on the pages of a book is like deciding on the scenes of a film." So take a colder look at some of Anthony's books and see what you can find.

Why not hand in your shape game drawing to a member of staff at the Idea Store or library and we will put them on the website for everyone to see.
