Beastly Boys!
On the 2nd July the 'Beastly Boys came to visit Idea Store Whitechapel to help us launch the summer reading challenge. Children from Bluegate Fields primary and Cyril Jackson primary came along to meet them and had a fantastic time pretending to be werewolves and other different monsters. What monster would you like to be? Send us a description of what you would look like and what special abilities you have, the most scary will win a copy of the Beastly Boys most recent book. The Jungle vampire is the most recent book, why not read it to help you complete the Summer reading challenge. On the 9th July Mark Robson author of Dragon Orb also came to Idea Store Whitechapel to talk to young people from Bow School for Boys, Swanlea Secondary and St Paul's Primary. I think everyone had a fantastic time listening to mark talk about his career in the RAF and about his writing. Mark has got a great website, look at all the books he has written http://www.markrobsonauthor.com/ we've got the latest one to borrow in Idea Stores if you want to try it out.

| Streetwise
Get streetwise with Maddy's Staying Safe Tips:
- Travel with a friend - avoid being on your own
- Always tell someone where you're going and what time you'll be back
- If you are carrying a phone or mp3 player, keep it out of sight in a zipped pocket or bag
- If you feel unsafe for any reason when you are out, go into a shop, library or another busy public place where you can ask for help
- Cross the roads at a zebra crossing and remember the rules of road safety at all time: Stop, Look, Listen, Think!
- Stay in streets and places that you know well
- Don't speak to strangers and tell your parents or your teacher if an adult approaches you for any reason
- Wear reflective clothing if you are out at night
- Make sure you know or carry important phone numbers like your home phone number and your mum or dad's mobile number

Tower Hamlets Book Award
Why not read one of the book award books to help you complete the summer reading challenge? One of my favourites is 'How Kirsty Jenkins stole the elephant' by Elen Caldecott who is a fantastic new writer who has written this most lovely book, I don't want to give the plot away as I want you to read it but includes a brief meeting with Grandad, a very modern family and a promise about an allotment not forgetting the elephant of course. This book has the most beautiful writing from the first paragraph, I could taste the peas as they popped out of the pod - just read it and see (or taste). See Kirsty Jenkin's blog to find out what happened after she stole the elephant http://www.kirstyjenkins.blogspot.com and take a look at all the other books on the book award longlist. The deadline for voting is September 12th so don't forget to talk to your teacher when you get back to school.

Enjoy a Good Book!
Who wnts 2 no? By Steve Barlow and Steve Skidmore
Dud's found a foolproof way of getting rich quick. All he has to do is put his personal details online. What could possibly go wrong? Zip and mouse aren't convinced: they want to know, who wants to know? This book is kept in the parents section in the children's libraries but it is a really funny story with a serious message so go and have a read and then email us with your online safety tips, we've got 2 signed copies to give away.
Have you read a good book? Why not write a book review telling everyone what you enjoyed about the book. Your book reviews will then appear on the Idea Store website for everyone around the world to enjoy! Send your book reviews to ideastore@towerhamlets.gov.uk |
I hope you enjoyed this month's e-newsletter, keep sending your book reviews and competition entries.
Have a great summer!
