500 Years of Henry VIII - Break into the Tower of London for £1

Go along to the Tower of London to celebrate the 500 years since the reign of Henry VIII. Dispel the widely known myths and learn more about the character that was Henry VIII.

Read more about Henry VIII, his life and reign here.

With your Tower Hamlets Idea Cards you and your family can visit this Historic site for just £1 each.  William the Conqueror started building the Tower in 1078 and later Kings and Queens added to it.  It has been a home to Royalty, a prison, a place of torture and execution, and even had a zoo!
Nowadays (and for the past 700 years) the Tower is home to the Crown Jewels, guarded by the Beefeaters and kept safe by the Ravens.  Legend has it that if the Ravens ever leave, the Kingdom and the Tower will fall, so be sure to behave yourselves when you see them!

Manga - how, where and why?

In Japan all types of comics are called manga, however in the UK we use the word 'manga' to describe comics only from Japan, or drawn in a Japanese style. In the past few years everyone has gone crazy for manga - this is great, as it means that you can now find manga books everywhere!

Manga books are read from back to front, as this is how all books are written and read in Japan - it's great fun to watch people who think you are reading your book the wrong way! Manga stories often run for a very long time, some have over 800 instalments! Popular series' are Fruits Basket, Spirited Away and Pokemon.

Idea Store Whitechapel has a new comic book and manga group starting after the Easter holidays so if you are a fan why not come along? Meet new friends, discuss your favourites and get a chance to draw your own and have it made into a real comic for others to read!
