Congratulations to our 2012 Middle School
T-Shirt
This year's t-shirt design contest winner is the young woman pictured. She is a student from Margaret Brent Middle School who has a real interest in art, and her original shirt design - one of many submitted by students from the four middle schools - was the unanimous selection of our contest committee. Look out for the bold checkerboard throughout the St. Mary's community - we hope you'll be seeing it around!

Hollywood Elementary:
Mural Project with FLOW Mentor and
SMCPS Art Teacher Mr.
Bobby Kneuer
Under the guidance and expertise of art teacher and FLOW Mentor Bobby Kneuer, the Hollywood Elementary FLOW group took on a complicated, thoughtful clay tile project, creating two mosaics which represent to them the meaning of FLOW.
The dragon mosaic, shown above, was created by the men and boys of FLOW. The process of creation took many steps. First, they re-designed a dragon picture to include the word "FLOW." They projected the image onto paper and cut out the pieces of the image in paper. Then they learned to use the slab roller and make the clay flat.
They traced the cut paper pieces onto flat white and red clay and cut them out. The next step was to color the white clay black, and then all the pieces were fired and glazed. Lastly, they assembled the fired pieces like a jigsaw puzzle, cemented them in place, and grouted. The bottom right-hand tile was large enough to engrave every member's name.
The group also produced this second mosaic of clay tiles, each of which again creates an image to reflect a personal understanding of the FLOW experience.
Above is an enlarged view of one of the central tiles in the large mosaic. It was designed, carved and painted by Mr. Kneuer. He describes the artistic process like this: "I looked up the word "flow" on Yahoo image search. I found lots of wavy lines and water flowing from faucets. I drew a faucet in the shape of an F. I drew little water droplets coming from the faucet with smiley faces on them. There is a puddle of water under the droplets to form the letter L. The world in the background represents O and the Future Leaders of the World. FLOW is about an older student or adult helping out a younger student -- we are a mentoring program. The small hand represents the mentee and the large hand represents the mentor. Together they form the W." |
Middle School FLOW Takes On the Newseum
Teacher mentors and mentees from our four middle school FLOW programs took several buses up to DC this month to have a museum adventure and outing in the big city.

The starting point was the Newseum, where students were immersed in the world's greatest news events through exhibits and galleries, as well as many interactive multimedia kiosks and special-effects movies. As a full group, they took a class on ethics in photojournalism. Everyone climbed to the top floor to walk on the outside terrace overlooking Pennsylvania Avenue were they were photographed with the Capital as backdrop. After lunch, school groups divided up to explore their own interests in the area. Some took the monuments walk along the Mall; others chose to visit the Air and Space Museum; others just wanted more time at the Newseum before hopping back on the buses to return home. It was a happy and full day - and a memorable one.
