 MENTORING MATTERS!

"Studies have shown that young people with mentors are more likely to graduate from high school and set higher goals for themselves, and they're less likely to skip school, use drugs or fight... By watching their mentors, children learn to expect more from themselves."

-First Lady Michelle Obama, 2011 National Mentoring Summit,
The Library of Congress, Washington, DC

OUR THANKS go out to all our mentors, mentor teachers, and site leaders for making our program a success. Although January was the official month to recognize and promote the importance of mentoring, it's never too late to express your thanks to someone who made an impact on your life as your mentor.

FLOW Goes to a
Georgetown Hoyas Game

On Saturday February 4, two bus fulls of middle school and high school FLOW mentors and mentees went to a Georgetown Hoyas game at the Verizon Center in DC.  The Hoyas defeated the University of South Florida Bulls by a huge margin,
and everyone had a great time!

Getting Slimed!

FLOW Mentoring made the front page of The Enterprise on February 3 with a dramatic photograph of third-grader mentee Erica R. reacting with horror as a great flow of blue slime drips from her fingers.

Erica participates in the FLOW Mentoring program at George Washington Carver Elementary where she and all the mentor-mentee pairs made slime together one session.

If you missed it in The Enterprise, please click on the link below:

*With thanks to Editor Rick Boyd at The Enterprise  for giving us permission to link to the photograph.

New Data Shows Mentoring As Proven Tool to Help Combat Challenges

The second annual National Mentoring Summit in DC last month provided the backdrop for outstanding data linking mentoring to positive academic, socio-emotional and behavioral outcomes for youth who face adversity. The Big Brothers Big Sisters Youth Outcomes Report indicated statistically significant improvements for youth during the first year of enrollment in the organization's nationwide mentoring program in three targeted outcome areas - educational success, avoidance of risky behaviors, such as truancy, and socio-emotional competency.

Correction

The Jan. 2012 edition of the FLOW Mentoring newsletter contained a mistake in the caption to photographs from White Marsh Elementary School.  It misidentified the source of the donation for their penguin craft project; the project was made possible by a generous donation from AMF Bowling.
