President Obama Proclaims
January as...
National Mentoring Month
"Every day, mentors help young Americans face the challenges of growing into adulthood. By setting a positive example and sharing their time, knowledge and experience, mentors play an essential role in preparing our Nation's youth for a bright future. During National Mentoring Month, we celebrate the contributions of all those who cultivate a supportive environment for the next generation, and we recommit to expanding mentorship opportunities across our country."

FLOW Celebrates
National Mentoring Month!

A mentor/mentee pair from Lexington Park Elementary enjoying
the St. Mary's College of MD basketball game.

In celebration of National Mentoring Month, all FLOW mentees and mentors and their families were invited to attend a St. Mary's College of Maryland men's basketball game on January 7.   It was an exciting game (St. Mary's won!), and we were glad to see so many FLOW faces.  Thank you to all who showed up for the game and made it a celebratory afternoon!

General Colin Powell Speaks about the Importance of Mentoring

Connecting young people to caring adults is crucial to successfully transitioning them from youth to adulthood. Mentoring is a proven method to ensure students complete their education. Youth who have a mentor are more likely to:

  • Attend and engage in school.
  • Finish high-school.
  • Continue onto college.

Greetings from Maia Jones

 oregon pic for newsletter

Maia Jones, former Assistant Program Manager for FLOW Mentoring, left us at the end of the last school year as she and her husband moved across the country to start new jobs.  Many of you remember Maia well - and she remembers you!

Maia is now living in the Willamette Valley of Oregon with her husband, who is a professor of biology at Western Oregon University. She is working as a Child and Adolescent Treatment Specialist at a residential treatment center for emotionally and behaviorally challenged adolescents and continuing to teach yoga on the side. She is also spending as much time as possible hiking and exploring in the mountains and coastal areas of Oregon. While she is enjoying her new life and job, she misses all the wonderful and dedicated people she worked with at FLOW, as well as the students in each program. She wishes everyone an excellent year of mentoring and sends her best from the west!
