FLOW Welcomes Spring!
The trees are blossoming, spring is in the air, and the mentoring relationships that have been nurtured throughout the year are blossoming as well. In each school program, you can see how strong the bonds between mentors and mentees have become, and how much enjoyment and inspiration both adults and students have gained through their time together. In this newsletter you'll see just a sampling of the exciting activities each program has engaged in, and the smiles that have resulted.

Hollywood FLOW Kids Eat Lunch with Dr. Martirano!
 | | Dr. Martirano with the Hollywood FLOW mentees, Principal Jennifer Gilman, and Rachel Gilman and Allison Bulvin (mentors), during the Superintendent's Authentic Visit. |
During the Superintendent's recent Authentic Visit to Hollywood Elementary School, Principal Jennifer Gilman chose the students in the Hollywood FLOW Mentoring program to meet with Dr. Martirano over lunch!
The students enjoyed a "working lunch" with the Superintendent. During their time together, Dr. Martirano and the FLOW mentees discussed several topics, including what the students wanted to be when they grew up. Responses included an inventor, teacher, counselor, and even an entertainer. Dr. Martirano stressed the importance of staying in school in order to meet your goals.
Jennifer Gilman selected the FLOW students for this visit because of their diversity and background, and for the improvement they have shown through their work with their mentors. It was a great honor for each student in the program, as well as the site leader of HES FLOW, Mr. Dave Morris.

High School Mentoring Programs Meet with Dr. Ben Carson
Students from the mentoring programs at Chopticon, Great Mills, and Leonardtown High Schools, along with the 11th grade Fairlead cohorts at each school, were invited to attend Dr. Ben Carson's THINK BIG presentation in Baltimore on March 7th. Dr. Ben Carson is a remarkable individual who overcame incredible obstacles to become a world renowned pediatric neurosurgeon. While they were there the students also toured the Reginald F. Lewis Museum of Maryland African American History and Culture. This was an extraordinary opportunity and Dr. Carson's presentation was an inspiration for all who attended.

Captain Hall Visits Lexington Park Elementary On March 21st, Captain Steven A. Hall, who heads the Special Operations Division of the St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office, visited the Lexington Park Elementary School FLOW Program. A dynamic and engaging speaker, he explained to mentors and mentees how his Division provides services such as school resource officers and training, education and protection to communities-including the LPES community. The students asked some wonderful questions such as, "Why do you like being a police officer"; "What are your daily duties?", "What is the best part of your job?", "How fast can you run?", "Have you ever been hurt on your job?", and "When do you need a SWAT Team?" It was an excellent opportunity for the students to not only learn about exciting career possibilities, but also to get to know a police officer in an intimate and positive setting. | |
