January is National Mentoring Month!

National Mentoring Month is a time to recognize those caring individuals who mentor young people across the country. Here at FLOW we would like to recognize and honor the over 120 dedicated mentors who meet with our students each week. Teacher Feedback

Twice a year we survey the teachers of our FLOW Mentees to get their feedback on how each student is progressing. After receiving the mid-year surveys, we were very pleased with the progress FLOW students are making, after just a few short months with their mentors:

As of January, teachers reported that of the FLOW Mentees who needed improvement in the following areas:
  • 60% of mentees showed improvement in completing homework to the teacher's satisfaction;
  • 66% of mentees showed improvement in participating in class;
  • 66% of mentees showed improvement in being attentive in class;
  • 63% of mentees showed improvement in behaving well in class;
  • 57% of mentees showed improvement in academic performance;
  • 61% of mentees showed improvement in attitude toward school; and,
  • 65% of mentees showed improvement in getting along well with others.

We have also received wonderful comments from the students' teachers. Here are just a few:

"[Mentee] has truly improved since the beginning of the school year. He is so much more positive!" Teacher, Margaret Brent Middle School

"[Mentee] seems to have gained self-confidence and it is clear she really enjoys FLOW. She is much more a part of things in class and her skills (particularly reading) and assignments are improving. This is an outstanding program." Teacher, Leonardtown Elementary

"[Mentee] has a lot of potential that he is just starting to realize." Teacher, Esperanza Middle School

"[Mentee] puts forth effort when he feels confident and valued. I feel FLOW has helped to build his confidence. He loves working with [his mentor]." Teacher, Lettie Marshall Dent Elementary

"[Mentee] has been extremely well behaved in class!! I am very proud of him, because he is also a good role model and other students seem to look up to him." Teacher, Leonardtown Middle School

"[Mentee] has worked very hard and wanted to make the A/B honor roll. He accomplished this goal at interims!" Teacher, Lexington Park Elementary

FLOW and St. Mary's College of Maryland Celebrate National Mentoring Month

Basketball

On Saturday, January 16th, St. Mary's College of Maryland's Athletic Department partnered with FLOW Mentoring  to celebrate National Mentoring Month. The St. Mary's College Men's Basketball team invited the FLOW community from across the county, including FLOW Site Leaders, Mentors, Mentees, and their families, to attend their January 16th game against Gallaudet University.

As the St. Mary's College Seahawks played to victory, the college recognized FLOW Site Leaders and Mentors for their service and the Spring Ridge Middle School Rhythm Club, directed by Ryan Gravelle, put on a fantastic half time performance. We had a great turnout of Site Leaders, Mentors, Mentees and their families and want to thank everyone for making it such a fun and memorable day.
