Grapefruit Can Lower
Cholesterol

Grapefruit
According to a recent study published by the
American Chemical Society's Journal of
Agriculture and Food Chemistry, a grapefruit
a day can significantly reduce cholesterol.
Researchers also discovered that red grapefruit is
even more beneficial than white grapefruit, likely
because the red variety has more antioxidants. A full
serving of grapefruit is defined as either a cup of
fresh fruit or half a cup of grapefruit juice. People
taking prescription medications should consult with
their doctor before consuming grapefruit since it may
interfere with some medications.

Dear Readers,

I would like to take a moment and thank everyone involved (sponsors, volunteers, participants, and spectators) for a great 2008. We accomplished many great feats over the past year thanks to your participation and partnership.
2008 Sports Year in Review
Color SportsIn 2008, we experienced participation growth in every sport offered. Softball (10%), Basketball (40%), Tennis (300%), Volleyball (60%), and Golf (33%).

Program sposorships exceeded $50,000. Thanks to sponsors such as: Knife River, Xtreme Grafx, Century 21, University Fencing, Lane Brothers Cabniets, Pacific Power, Coastal Farm and more.

Our softball program underwent major improvements to it's facilities that some players refered to as an "Historical Event". These improvements were also recognized in the Albany Democrat Herald.

We have two new projects underway in the area that will benefit our City's youth sports program as well as bring us closer to implementing our Timber Linn Park master plan. The first was the approval by our City Council this past fall of a new 30 acre youth sports complex in South Albany. This is where the existing Timber Linn soccer fields will be moved so we can begin construction on the new softball complex in their place. The second project is the Kinder Park youth complex which will provide youth baseball, softball, and soccer fields. The complex is in the construction stage and is scheduled for completion in fall of 2009.

We held our first annual Post-Season softball BBQ, which was an event aimed at recognizing sponsors, team and individual achievements. Trophies were given out to the sponsors in attendance to thank them for their generous support.  We also gave out over $2,500 in free raffle prizes. This fun filled family event was a great way to end a very successful season.

We experienced so many other positive changes to the sports programs in 2008, we can't begin to mention them all. So thanks again for a great year and best wishes for an awesome 2009.

2009 SOFTBALL NEWS! CHANGES!
Softball Happy Face The 2009 season is quickly approaching and we are very excited about the new variations to the program.

As mentioned in last month's e-news,we've added an "E" league to our program for novices and beginners. We will be incorporating a new home run rule for each league as follows: A-5, B-4, C-3, D-2, E-1.

Players on an "E" league roster will not be eligible for play in any other league within their division (men's & coed). This will ensure a pure "E" league for recreational novice teams.

We will also be placing teams within their divisions based on last years team statistics. A team that consists of at least 60% of returning players will not be considered a new team and will be placed according to last years statistics.

Rosters must be completed online prior to payment in order to be registered. In order to ensure proper league placement as well as tracking payments, any team failing to submit a completed roster with contact information for each player prior to registration deadline will not be scheduled and be ineligible for play.

We will only be offering double header leagues in the men's and women's divisions.

In the next e-news letter there will be a special softball section with the latest news regarding all aspects of the program Jan thru May, so stay posted and keep on the lookout for next months issue. For more details go to www.quickscores.com/albany or www.albanyparksandrecreation.org
