October 2008

idea

 Greetings!

"The best way to have a good idea is to have lots of ideas". I believe this quote by Linus Pauling is a perfect fit for our sports program. I believe ideas bring forth change (change=possibilty curve), incredible things happen when we are open to possibilities.
I have seen the ideas of (you) the participant and our staff begin to virtually resurrect our sports programs from the dead. Over the last two years we have seen significant growth in our programs such as softball 12%, basketball 40%, volleyball 33%, golf 60% and tennis 300%. The numbers speak for themselves, we're growing and I want your ideas in hopes of providing the best healthy living/sports programs for you and our community.
I will be sending out an e-news letter on a frequent basis in order to communicate my ideas, receive your input, share quality lifestyle information, and most of all to communicate with YOU the direction of Albany Parks & Recreation Sports.
For those of you who are not familiar with our sports webpage please visit www.quickscores.com/albany for up-to-date information about all youth and adult sports.

Albany takes step on sports complex
Youth Complex
The city of Albany has taken the first concrete step toward establishing a new youth sports complex.
Plans call for at least 10 soccer fields. Youth soccer will be moved from Timber-Linn Memorial Park. Once moved, the parks department will install new softball fields. In addition to soccer, the new sports complex will likely feature youth football and baseball fields as well. Your community park will have other features such as a playground, picnic areas, ample parking and perhaps a jogging trail. In the coming months, the Parks and recreation department will be holding community meetings to seek your input on the design of the park. Your input would be most welcome.
Next year - planning first phase of improvement. We are hoping to begin construction within the next two years.

Earth and Sports Eat whole grains for a smaller waist
If you want to reduce your waist size, it could be as simple as buying the right whole grain cereal or bread. In a recent Penn State study, researchers found that people who were counseled in healthy eating and exercise lost weight, but those who were advised to get their grain servings from whole grains rather than refined grains lost significantly more weight in their abdominal region. Foods that can be beneficial for waist circumference loss include oatmeal, whole grain cereal, brown rice, whole-wheat pasta, and snacks such as granola bars, popcorn, and whole-wheat crackers. Foods in which at least 51 percent of the grain comes from whole grains are recommended.

Drinking and eating, oh my

How much time do Americans spend consuming foods and beverages? According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, about 67 minutes of every day as main activity. This excludes snacking while engaging in a secondary activity - sports, watching television, working. That means the average American is eating and drinking for what amounts to 16 full 24-hour days every year.
