Exceptional Vallejo Teen Wins Youth of the Year Honor for Continentals of Omega Boys and Girls Club

As the first Youth of the Year in the 46 years Continentals of Omega Boys & Girls Club has been in existence, 17 year old Kelvin is a true example of an extraordinary young man recognized by Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) for his sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community.

Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. As BGCA's premier youth recognition program, Youth of the Year recognizes outstanding contributions to a member's family, school, community and Boys & Girls Club, as well as overcoming personal challenges and obstacles. Youth of the Year encourages Club members to reach their full potential by achieving academic success, leading healthy lifestyles and contributing to their communities. Youth of the Year honorees are shining examples and living proof that great futures start at Boys & Girls Clubs.

"The Boys & Girls Club is a place where I can hang out after school with my friends, help other kids complete their homework, and also be a leader who helps provide a safe place after school. I enjoy teaching the Members things they didn't know how to do, like reading, writing, and also leadership skills, which are a win, win situation, because they help me too. A college degree is the foundation of a new beginning, especially for me. The power that you get from an education can help you progress in life, be an example for the younger kids you have around you, and eventually, give back to the community and Club that helped raise you." said Youth of the Year Kelvin Jones.

brandmanBrandman University Celebrates Three Year Partnership with Solano Community College

(Continued)

Chancellor Gary Brahm of Brandman University said, "These types of partnerships between community colleges and Brandman University will continue to play an important role in students pursuing a higher education especially at a time when the economic crisis is forcing the California State University and University of California systems to limit enrollments."

Due to California's budget crunch, SCC has announced that they will no longer be offering a summer session. Brandman offers a full schedule of classes in the summer that SCC students can choose from. Any SCC student that enters into a Bachelor's degree program will have access to enhanced cooperative academic and student services including advising services, information sessions, technology support and educational plans.  The agreement also allows students access to Web Advisor and Brandman University academic advisors while still attending community college and taking transferable coursework. Brandman University waives all application and transfer fees for students in the program.

Those interested in learning more about the Early Advantage Program should contact Brandman University at (707) 863-0990. Brandman University's Fairfield campus is conveniently located at 4820 Business Center Drive, Suite 100 in Fairfield, California in the Green Valley/Cordelia area.

ContinentalsOfOmegaExceptional Vallejo Teen Wins Youth of the Year Honor for Continentals of Omega Boys & Girls Club

(Continued)

KJ biological Father was reported to be incarcerated in Clarksburg Penitentiary, his other brother and cousin were also system involved, and it looked like he was headed down the same path. At age eleven he first started at the club, he was reluctant and felt as if the Club was for babies or a babysitter, he stopped going and started to hang out with the wrong crowd. When KJ returned he began to understand what the Boys & Girls Club was really all about, and that the other people he was hanging out with, were not really there to help him succeed, but were guiding him down the path of destruction.

KJ participated in Youth Partnership, a program which solves community issues through leadership building. KJ has been celebrated by the Peoples School staff. His principle, Mr. Kelly noted his incredible attributes and has placed him in a leadership role, in the developing their School Based mentoring program "Emerging Gentlemen", where he is now the President. He works with Camp Fire (GEC), Teen Connection, Peoples High School Leadership program, and volunteers at the Continentals of Omega Boys & Girls Club. KJ was also awarded by the Teen Connection program as the Mentee of the Year. KJ has brought his grades and credits up so he will be able to attend Jesse Bethel High School next year, his senior year. He has aspirations of attending Stanford going towards a law degree, or another field in Law Enforcement.

On Monday, March 19, in front of Club Members and special guests, KJ was honored by Program Director Essex Cook, Staff and Football Coach Eric Stewart, Executive Director Wendy B. Jones, Mr. Edison Kelly of Peoples High School, and Ms. Florence Parks of Fighting Back. The Omega fraternity purchased a suit for KJ to wear to Apple Headquarters on Tuesday, March 20 where he will receive his Youth of the Year medallion. Mrs. Jones also awarded him with a certificate and Macy's gift card in order to purchase him another suit and other needed items needed as he represents the club around the city of Vallejo. It is easy to understand why he was chosen as our Youth of the Year.
