Dear Oenophile,

Last summer we offered a rather extraordinary collection of perfectly aged chardonnays from the legendary Mayacamas winery. Since it has cooled off, we've been shipping the wines and our clients are finally getting to drink them! The response has been overwhelming...one of the online wine bulletin boards I frequent recently had a poster writing about the '99 he received from us (and I quote): "Wow, beautiful nose on this wine! Immediately bursting with sweet pineapple, papaya and custard, perhaps creme brulee as it has a hint of caramelized sugar as well. Some of the tropical qualities carry through to the flavor profile, which has a rich mouthfeel, and the pineapple carries through, but this time more of a fresh quality, with a bit of sour citrus. The finish again picks up, and bursts with sweet pineapple once again, and a strong mineral quality comes through, much like a good Chablis. Strong acidic base, should be excellent with food. Color is rich and golden. Another wine I wish I had purchased more of when I had the chance. (94 pts.)"

Our overall favorites were the 1998 and the 2003, but without question the wines are long agers, holding beautifully. We went back to our source and asked for more, and we got some just in time for a special BLACK FRIDAY offering. These are fabulous wines, at insanely low prices. Here's some excerpts from the summer offer. While they last!

"truly great California chardonnay in a style that too few of us taste"..."they convey a sense of somewhereness...profound expressions of high-elevation Mount Veeder place....Really, you can’t do better than Mayacamas Vineyards for California wine profoundness." -- Matt Kramer, Wine Spectator

We conducted 3 extensive blind tastings. In every case, the Mayacamas wines beat their French and CA counterparts as the groups favorites, beating (crushing! in some cases) equivalent vintages of top producers of Corton, Puligny, and Russian River: wines at 3 to 4 TIMES THE PRICE!!! Our ABSOLUTE FAVORITES were the 1998 and the 2003, but ALL the wines are in excellent health and showing fantastically for those who appreciate the style (not buttery, not sweet, etc.).

THROW OUT every notion you have of "too old". These wines are just getting good! Throw out vintage generalizations. In fact, throw out butter and popcorn and oak and all the things you THOUGHT you knew about California chardonnay. Think STEEL. Think LIQUIFIED MINERALS. Think of pulling a rock out of an icy cold stream and tasting it. Think oysters, sea air, lemons, marcona almonds, and asian pears. These wines are SPECIAL and deliberately different. Last year, I had a 1968 Mayacamas Chard. Yup, 1968. IT WAS EARTH-SHATTERING. Breathtaking wine. The pricing is truly ASTOUNDING. You can drink or hold these wines for many many more years.

MIX AND MATCH the vintages in this offer ANY WAY YOU LIKE. Our STARTING price ($29.95) is by far the lowest in the country (list is $40+) and it gets WAY BETTER! Just an unbelievable offer! A great time to get some people together to load up and get the crazy good price! And don't forget $9.00 a case ground shipping (weather permitting)! Here's the deal....

1998 Mayacamas Chardonnay $29.95 This is JUST hitting maturity, with a beautiful crisp color that looks more like a 2008! Round and glycerin and lovely on the palate, it is a touch more tropical than the other vintages, with touches of pineapple, green apple, almond and a crisp, clean, long finish. Our favorite of all of them!

2003 Mayacamas Chardonnay $29.95
Still a youthful, brash youngster. Killer mouth-watering acidity, with tropical notes that hit after the first lemony blast. Minerals, chalk, pure, laser-like fruit. Our second favorite!
