Care.  Support.  Solutions.June 2012

LadyDear ,

Summer is here - it's time to get ready for heat, humidity and the possibility of hurricanes.

As we learned last year, even minor storms can cause catastrophe.  The loss of power for days can cause our lives and ability to communicate to come to a screeching halt.   Each town has been working diligently over the past year to improve it's response to citizens and their needs during times of power outage and other potential crisis.

One suggestion that has come out of last year's communication shut down is that individuals may have access to more information if they provide their local emergency response team with their cell phone number, in addition to a home land line telephone number - which, unfortunately, can be non-operational during massive power outages.

If you are unfamiliar with your town's emergency response system, or would like to know more about your towns emergency plan, please visit your town website and look for information on Emergency Preparedness.  Each town typically has an individual contact or a panel of local professionals who are addressing this need.  See the quick links below for towns which have online registration for emergency notifications.

Keep an eye on the weather and know that HESSCO and the towns in Southern Norfolk County are doing everything we can to ensure safety and access to services during times of need.

Have a happy and safe summer!

Sincerely,

Mary Jean McDermott

HESSCO's HESSCO Celebrates Volunteers

On May 2nd, HESSCO honored and celebrated our 810 volunteers at a dinner event filled with good food, great company and moving testimonials about the agency's volunteer programs and the dedication of our volunteers. With over 350 in attendance, the night was a great success. Among those honored this year was Judy Teplow (pictured above with HESSCO's Executive Director, Mary Jean McDermott). Ms. Teplow has been a volunteer for HESSCO's Nutrition Department for 30 years. Without any doubt, 30 years of delivering meals to homebound elders takes an amazing amount of spirit and kindness. A special thanks to Judy and to all of our volunteers for their great work and dedication.
