Care for the Caregiver
Greetings!

Spring is a time of renewal.  We will soon see the buds on our trees and our grass growing greener by the day. What better time to reach out for support as a caregiver than during this time of change? There are multiple opportunities for caregivers to get help. This edition of The Journey will look at some new or different ways to seek support through technology as well as the tried and true in-person methods. Let the season of spring be your time of personal renewal and the time to build and grow.

                                                     Sincerely,

Technology and Caregiver Support

Technology can be an integral part of caregiver support. It provides easy access to information and communication with others when we want it and how we want it. We can govern our interaction much more directly. Here are a few new ways to seek caregiver support or to advocate/participate in the development of caregiver support.

  1. The Alzheimer's Association has a new social networking site for those with Alzheimer's disease or their caregivers. This site allows caregivers to connect with others, ask questions, offer ideas. Go to https://www.alzconnected.org for more info and to join.
  2. Shape the future of caregiving with a smart phone/tablet app. Take the following survey about what would interest you in a caregiving app: https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/X2YBJWZ
  3. Receive a weekly caregiver E-Newsletter from Caregiver.com. This E-Newsletter has interesting interviews and articles written by various professionals and family caregivers. There are also opportunities to post questions and seek ideas from other caregivers. http://www.caregiver.com/subscribe/subscribe_newsletter.htm
  4. The Lifespan Respite Coalition is asking caregivers to take their survey about what you need for support and help as a caregiver. This coalition of service providers is looking to improve the current system of support services and wants to know what will work best for you. As a caregiver, this is an opportunity for you to advocate for the future of respite services available in our state. https://www.keysurvey.com/votingmodule/s180/survey/384569/29b1
  5. Start a CareCentral site for your family. This gives you a central place to keep family members informed, share care needs, gather information and support. You can alert all family members at the same time of the problems as well as the triumphs. Learn more at http://www.carecentral.com

These are just some of the ways caregivers can seek support and advocate from the ease of their computer. This technology allows us to make the connection when and how we want - just a click away.

Person-Centered Support
We sometimes need more support than a website or Internet connection can offer. There are several ways to receive in-person, individualized support. Hands

1.  A consultation with a Caregiver Specialist offers you the opportunity to discuss your personal situation, learn about your strengths as a caregiver, discover ways of improving your health and focusing on your own needs. A consultation can occur in a face-to face appointment, over the phone or via email. For more information, contact HESSCO Elder Services' Caregiver Specialist, Christina Liston at cliston@hessco.org.

2. Attending a local education program can offer you targeted information on a topic of interest to you. Attending local programs gives you an opportunity to learn who are the care providers in your area.  You can review several area options in the section below titled "Upcoming Events".

For a flyer on HESSCO programs regarding Alzheimer's disease, go to https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B1zEeAQpLedGNjhXSDNkWFBRUEdqOENvcnR3cmViZw/edit?pli=1 .

For a flyer on a program HESSCO offers regularly on general caregiving, go to https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B1zEeAQpLedGdGRpbExwZDRSN09RcVVpQ1ZGTTgxQQ/edit?pli=1

3. Attending a caregiver support group is a great way to find the mutual support that only other caregivers can provide. As attendees are both givers and receivers of support, the support group is satisfying and educating in many ways for caregivers.  To locate a list of area support groups, go to http://www.hessco.org/family_caregiver

4. Advocate for yourself and other caregivers by joining the Partnership to Promote Healthy Caregiving. This recently developed Partnership is a coalition of service providers and family caregivers who are trying to improve services to caregivers and advocate for the needs of caregivers in Massachusetts. The Partnership meets quarterly and is currently working on choosing their priorities. For more information, contact Christina Liston at HESSCO Elder Services at cliston@hessco.org.

All of these options offer you the opportunity for personalized interaction with professionals and/or other family caregivers.  You can make the most of these opportunities by molding the experience for what you need.
