Dear ,
2009 marked HESSCO's 32nd anniversary. Over the years, we have seen many changes to types and variety of services provided to meet the changes of a growing elder population. As we look forward to the coming years, we are expanding our view of elder services and embracing the coming age of Baby Boomers and their redefinition of being a "senior". We understand that this group is not the traditional elder of years past. Today, this is a population expanding the definition of retirement and taking on an increased role in the care of those around them, be it aging parents or grandchildren. HESSCO supports this broadened experience of later life and retirement through our work with area Councils on Aging and local businesses. We are focusing on supporting these "new seniors" in a way that provides opportunity for continued community involvement, support in their role as caregiver and provides a view of services that allows seniors to advocate and define their needs as they continue to age in the community. HESSCO views itself as a community partner, personally with each consumer and programmatically with area agencies and organizations who share our vision of offering the community care, support and solutions throughout the aging and caregiving process.

Health Insurance Decisions
Your are not alone during Open Enrollment
November 15th - December 31st marks the time each year when Medicare
offers participants the opportunity of "Open Enrollment". During this time, an eligible individual can enroll or change their enrollment in Medicare D.
Traditionally this period of time causes great confusion and stress for elders and their caregivers who are trying to sort through the variety of options available to them.
While the decisions to be made are yours, you do not have to figure out the maze of insurance alone. HESSCO's SHINE Department is here to help you navigate the sea of health care choices and make educated decisions about coverage.
During "Open Enrollment", SHINE encourages you to make sure you do not lose coverage by using ORSS:
- Open all mail from Social Security, Medicare and your plan
- Read the information
- Save and call
- SHINE (Serving the Health Information Needs of Elders)
For more information, or to seek the assistance of a SHINE counselor, call HESSCO or dial 1-800-243-4636 and press 3.

Volunteers make HESSCO Work
This time of year, we all reflect on the past year and things
we are grateful for. Here at HESSCO, we have deep gratitude for the wonderful staff, community members and local organizations that help us to provide services, meet growing needs and carry out our mission. However, no part of HESSCO would be possible, without the tireless and ongoing support of our volunteers. These volunteers have great and varying roles, ranging from home delivered meal drivers to
board members to administrative help in the office. HESSCO currently has nearly 700 volunteers who carry much of the work done in the community.
HESSCO's volunteers truly make the organization work and the gift of your time, skills and expertise appears bottomless. Thank you to all our volunteers during this holiday season, and a special thank you for making our programs and organization a great success!
If you would like to share a story about a volunteer, please contact Amy Cogan at: acogan@hessco.org. For more information about HESSCO's volunteer opportunities, visit: www.hessco.org |
