Honoring our Roots, Building for the Future
2011 National Conference Highlights
Thanks to all of you who made the 2011 National CLT Conference so successful (especially local hosts Homestead CLT and the Northwest CLT Coalition)! Over 260 people attended the conference in Seattle this October. Some of the highlights were:
- Keynote speaker Ron Sims, who called out the successes of the CLT movement -- and challenged us to bring our efforts to scale -- and that we should not wait for others, but work to build coalitions that will bring the CLT solution to more communities. He also shared stories about the importance of having a place to call home, and encouraged CLT practitioners to keep up the good work in challenging times.
- A boat tour to two CLTs in the San Juan islands(Lopez CLT and OPAL CLT).
- An incredible tour of Homestead CLT homes -- where a Homestead resident told tour participants that "a CLT home is more than housing, it is just housing."
- Mtamanika Youngblood, the 2011 Swann Matthei Award winner, who gave an inspirational acceptance speech and shared her journey from New Communities to Atlanta, as part of the "arc of justice".
Documents from the conference have been posted on the CLT Network website. Check out photos of the conference on our Facebook Page.
2012: Join us the week of September 10 in beautiful Burlington, Vermont. The leaves will be turning as Champlain Housing Trust hosts this conference on the shore of Lake Champlain.
2013: We are excited to announce that Neighborhood Housing Services of Greater Cleveland will be our hosts for the 2013 National CLT Conference in Cleveland -- a great city on a great lake.

FHA Update and Call to Action: Send a letter to the FHA Commissioner
FHA has committed to removing the barriers and paving the way for wide and consistent use of FHA-insured mortgages for single family affordable housing programs, including CLTs and deed restricted properties. Last July, FHA staff indicated that they would implement changes to address CLT issues and that it would take six months to complete the process. FHA has not begun implementation. At the end of October, during the National CLT Conference in Seattle, the HUD Region X Director, Mary McBride, confirmed that this is on FHA's agenda. Please take a moment and send a letter to the FHA Commissioner no later than Friday, November 18, 2011 - encourage FHA to start the process NOW! We have drafted a sample letter that you can use. Please insert a homeowner story from your community (see sample letter). There is also an FHA Update posted here and provides more background information on the topic. We strongly encourage all CLTs and partners to also reach out to their Representatives and make a push for the implementation of these changes. Access to FHA mortgages is important, contact them today! If you need contact information for your representative go to www.placenow.org. |
