CLT Academy Capacity Building Institutes
In April and May of 2011, the CLT Academy will launch two Capacity Building Institutes, one for advanced CLT practitioners, and the second for persons involved in starting up CLTs in the Gulf Coast states. The Capacity Building Institutes (CBIs) blend place-based courses, web-based collaboration websites, webinars, and technical assistance to provide an integrated set of educational services to participants. This approach was piloted several years ago by the Northwest Community Land Trust Coalition with great success, and we are pleased to have the two lead instructors from that effort, Julie Brunner and Erika Malone, leading our CBI efforts. For more information about the Capacity Building Institutes -- just keep reading!

Gulf Coast Capacity Building Institute
The community land trust movement proudly traces its roots back to the early civil rights movement in the South. The first community land trust, New Communities, was organized in 1968 in Albany Georgia by Slater King, cousin of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Charles Sherrod (husband of former Georgia USDA state director Shirley Sherrod), and other civil right activists. Community land trusts are a great tool for empowering communities to create and preserve affordable housing, promote neighborhood-based commercial development, promote urban and rural agriculture - virtually any land use that serves the needs of the local community. The Gulf Coast Community Land Trust Capacity Building Institute (CBI) is a multi-faceted approach that will provide a comprehensive set of tools to participants so you can establish your own community land trusts - whether it means adding a community land trust program to an existing nonprofit organization - or starting up a new community land trust from scratch. The National Community Land Trust Network, through its Community Land Trust Academy, is offering this CBI focused on people living in the gulf coast states, which will begin in May 2011. Advanced Capacity Building Institute
The Advanced Capacity Building Institute for CLT Practitioners is a series of work
sessions with the goal of solving some of the burning CLT organizational and policy
challenges of our day. Collaborate with practitioners from some of the highest
functioning CLTs in the country to address your organization's needs and to elevate
the caliber of organizational best practices and standards. Consisting of two in-person sessions and multiple distance work sessions and webinars, you'll not only come away with a set of vetted policies, procedures and model documents but
you'll create lasting relationships with colleagues on whom you can count and call
in the future.
The first in-person session will take place on April 14 - 15 at the Minnesota CLT Coalition Spring Conference (see above). Participants will need to commit to attending both in-person gatherings, doing the work assigned to them within their work-groups and participating in the distance/web-based portion of the institute.
For more information, email CLT Academy Director Greg Rosenberg at greg@cltnetwork.org or call 503-493-1000. Or you can check out the Upcoming Courses page on our website.

Free Webinar on Communicating Strategically -- Discovering the Activation Point
On March 31st, Spitfire Strategies will be conducting another free webinar for CLT practitioners on "Discovering the Activation Point". Many social change issues have demonstrated significant public support, but this support is often passive. There is a gap between people saying they care about something, and those actually doing something about it. Spitfire Strategies will bridge the gap between awareness and action with tips and strategies to engage and activate your audience. Here is the call in /log in information:
