Fraud Cases Proliferating Like Spring Flowers
Cases of fraud have always plagued the economy, but during the past few months, revelations about their magnitude and impact have astounded the public, and challenged the legal system. Names like Madoff, Dreier, and Satyam (the multi-billion dollar fraud called "India's Enron") have become common currency. With the economic downturn, instances of fraud, embezzlement and theft are already on the rise, and reports of major Ponzi schemes and earnings inflation seem to be becoming commonplace. The damage from fraud continues long after the initial wrongdoing, and unraveling its aftermath is complex.

The Impact of Fraud: Madoff and Beyond begins by identifying the wrongdoers, then identifies those who owed a legal duty to stop them or to warn the public, then outlines the methods of recovering the money-even if it has gone to innocent parties. Take advantage of this opportunity to hear leading experts discuss these cases and how to bring or defend them.

Regulations on Data Security Effective Soon
Massachusetts now has what many consider to be  the most comprehensive data protection regulation in the country. Those detailed regulations, which will become effective January 1, 2010, apply to every individual or entity, including those located outside of Massachusetts, that maintain personal information about a Massachusetts resident in paper or electronic format. New Data Security Rules and Best Practices, on June 5, provides an overview of the law by government officials and then provides you with the opportunity to attend a workshop on "Best Practices" with a focus on Government Agencies, Private Schools and Universities or Municipalities. Lawyers who represent governmental agencies, public and private higher education institutions and municipalities will benefit from this program. Attend now to make sure you will be in compliance.

Dramatic Revisions in Guardianship Law
After many years, the Uniform Probate Code has finally been enacted in Massachusetts. As of July 1, 2009, Article V of the Code goes into effect. This means dramatic changes in Guardianship and Conservatorship law. Working with Chief Justice Carey, and others from the Probate Court, we have designed a program to explain the nuts and bolts of how the new law will be implemented. The key people who have been working on the forms and procedures will be available to explain the new forms and how to integrate these changes into your practice.

Internet Law Treatise
Professor Publishes Internet Law Treatise
A primer for both students and practitioners, "Internet Law in a Nutshell", a new book from Suffolk Law Professor Michael Rustad, represents the first short treatise on Internet Law.

The text covers a broad array of Internet Law topics in enough depth for practicing attorneys but in language clear enough for those curious about issues such as jurisdiction, cyberbullying, online contracting and licensing, the protection of online intellectual property assets, cybertorts, First Amendment rights in cyberspace, and criminal liability for Internet activity.

Rustad, who has taught Internet law at Suffolk Law since 1994, traces the rise of the Internet through rapidly evolving Web 3.0 before summarizing key legal cases and statutes that have helped to shape law surrounding cyberspace activity. Rustad also takes a look at global Internet Law, examining European Community directives such as the Electronic Commerce Directive, the Brussels Regulation and the Rome I Regulation.
