Happy New Year!
This new year brings important new developments in the law and practice. The upcoming semester at Advanced Legal Studies offers you many opportunities to learn about changes that will impact you and your clients. Visit our website regularly for details as the semester unfolds.

Massachusetts Evidence Guide
One major transformation is the New Massachusetts Evidence Guide. This manual will impact practice for all litigators.  To learn what the court will be expecting of you, we offer a two-part program. The first session, "A Guide to the Guide" will be lead by the Honorable R. Marc Kantrowitz, who headed the SJC Advisory Committee that wrote the Guide. The second session, focusing on difficult evidentiary issues, will be lead by Justice John M. Greaney, the new Director of the Macaronis Institute for Trial and Appellate Advocacy. Attend these sessions and learn not only how to use the Guide, but also how judges and attorneys address troublesome evidentiary problems.
Critical Changes for Divorce Practitioners
Also new for 2009, are revised Child Support Guidelines. On February 12, six weeks after the effective date, Guidelines Task Force members will discuss the substantive changes, but the emphasis will be on analysis of implementation challenges. Come with your questions, issues and problems, and find the answers and solutions you need. A companion program on March 12, features the recently released work of the Alimony Task Force. Members of the task force will review such matters as recommendations for reasonableness of the amount and duration of awards; standards for determining attributions of income; special tax consequences and issues in same-sex divorce.

Brown Bag Luncheon Series:
Intellectual Property Basics

Massachusetts may be the new Texas in the world of patent litigation. Two significant developments in the past month show that patent litigation should increase in Massachusetts and almost certainly will decline in the infamous court in Marshall, Texas, also known as the Eastern District of Texas. Experts will be available at the Brown Bag to address practice concerns in the area of: Patent prosecution; patent litigation, trademarks and licensing. Bring your lunch and questions and share in this networking and educational opportunity.
