The Business of Leadership

The Business of Leadership is the title of WICT 2010 Leadership Conference that I had the pleasure in  attending this month.  What an apropos title for WICT members on many levels.  Most of us deal with business and leadership in our day jobs and join organizations like WICT to get more out of our business lives and to become better leaders.

The Leadership Conference, in addition to having fantastic networking opportunities, provided great opportunities for attendees to improve their 'business self' and their leadership skills.  From "Innovations in Technology" to "Being Strategic..." to "Leadership and the Bottom Line:  Impacting Performance & Profit" this conference provided educational sessions that focused on bottom-line results and helping attendees gain knowledge that can help them make a difference in their companies-and that was just in the first day.  Speaking of the first day, the Opening Keynote was delivered by Suze Orman who has so many awards and credentials that it would take up my whole article.  Needless to say, Suze Orman delivered a motivating delivery on personal finance and reacting to the economy.  I left motivated and excited about new contacts I made.

The Business of Leadership also translates into our Breaking the Mold awards celebration on October 28th.  Please join us at the Holiday Inn Mart in Chicago as we recognize WICT members for their business acumen and leadership skills.  Kim Martin, President/General Manager, WE tv and Wedding Central will moderate the panel of winners.  See below for more information on the winners and the event.

Meanwhile, let me leave you with a quote from a Pepperdine University Study that was featured in the WICT Leadership Conference Program, "The 25 best corporations for women on the Fortune 500 list had 34 percent higher profits than industry medians."  That's good business and good leadership.

I hope to see you at Breaking the Mold on October 28th!

BTM Winners - What we are reading

"The Lost Years" by Kristina Wandzilak
Written as a dual narrative, this is a mother and daughter's heartbreaking story of addiction and recovery, which was the premise of the TLC series "Addicted" that aired earlier this year. It scares the death out of me, as my children are nearing their teenage years. Suggested by Barb Oates

"Digital Fortress" by Dan Brown

The NSA's top cryptographer Susan Fletcher races against time to find the key to solve a secret code created by an NSA insider.  Along the way she learns of lies and deceit and is caught fighting for her life and the life of her lover all while trying to protect our country. Suggested by Heather Hipke

"Managing from the Heart" by Hyler Bracey and Jack Rosenblum.

I like the message that effective leaders can be competent AND compassionate.

Suggested by LeAnn Talbot

"Devil in the White City" by Erik Larson

I'm reading this book now and I can barely put it down! I love reading and watching "fictionalized" history, especially in this book since it centers on Chicago in the late 1800's and events that transpired around the creation of the World's Fair.

Suggested by Lisa Barroso

Guy's Corner

by Scott Keiler

With the Bears season underway which negates a preview of the first few weeks, Guy's Corner is breaking out the crystal ball for a look ahead to the remaining games.  By the time this reaches readers, we'll see how accurate these early predictions were.  But I'm sad to report that the Bears will just miss the playoffs with a 9-7 record which leads to the firing of Lovie Smith.  Lovie it or hate it, I bring to you the official Guy's Corner 2010 Bears season prediction:
