| Patriot Day - Cumberland County | | |
This year's 9th Annual Patriot Day Festival will be held on Saturday, April 21 from 10a-4p. The opening ceremonies will begin at 10 a.m. on the courthouse lawn. Following the opening ceremonies, we will have a parade that will bring everyone from the Courthouse lawn to the new Middle/High School Complex (less than a mile west of the Courthouse), where the rest of the festivities will be held. We will have a dunk tank, a mechanical bull, Orbitron, art and craft, food and informational vendors, and last but definitely not least, we will have Steve Bassett performing on the main stage on the front lawn. We are offering the option of having an indoor or outdoor booth to our vendors, and will have live performances by the Longwood Belly Dancers, Cumberland Step Team and Allen's Mill Band on the inside stage, just to name a few. Farmville Wine Festival Set for Saturday, April 21

FARMVILLE, VA - The 3rd Annual Farmville Wine Festival (FWF) will feature live jazz entertainment from Longwood University on the Performance Stage sponsored by CENTRA Southside Community Hospital. Some of the featured entertainers are Jay Coward (sax & piano), Max Doss (bass), Luke Talian (drums), Greg Robey (trombone & steel drums), Rick Neller (trumpet), Holly Phelps (sax), Greg Thorpe (guitar), and Sarah Cave (vocals).
Enjoy music & more at the Farmville Wine Festival on Saturday, April 21, 11 am-5 pm at Riverside Park. In the event of bad weather, the festival will be held inside at Fuqua School. The Board of Directors of the Farmville Area Chamber of Commerce invites you to the April Membership Meeting on Monday, April 9th at The Farmville Farmers' Market. Our luncheon meeting has been moved to this location for April only. Our community is very excited about the opening of High Bridge and we are pleased that Zoe Rodgers, Virginia State Parks Visitor Services Specialist for Central Virginia Region and Craig Guthrie, Park Ranger will be updating us on activities and events planned for High Bridge Trail State Park. High Bridge Opens Tomorrow!!

Second Battle For High Bridge
In celebration of the opening of High Bridge this weekend, High Bridge Trail State Park is pleased to announce a hike and talk on the newly completed bridge at 10 a.m. Saturday, April 7 and 4 p.m. Sunday, April 8, 2012. Park Interpreter, Bob Flippen, will lead a walk on the newly completed pedestrian bridge and discuss the significance of this battle and the role it played in the closing days of the American Civil War.
Participants are encouraged to arrive at the River Road access parking lot in Cumberland County, between 9 and 9:30 on Saturday and 3:00 to 3:30 on Sunday. Proceed 9/10 of a mile to High Bridge where the program will begin. Water and binoculars are recommended and a total distance of about three miles is estimated.
On April 7, 1865 the Second Battle for High Bridge was fought resulting in the destruction of four spans and the Federal Second Corps crossing into Cumberland County on a captured wagon bridge in pursuit of the retreating Army of Northern Virginia.
