March 2012

Welcome to our newsletter for March 2012!

If you've used Google maps, you know what a great tool they can be. Now Google is charting Toronto's laneways and paths, which is helpful for walking and cycling.

Direct Energy customers may have received notice that their water heater contract was changing unless they opted out. Good news: they've cancelled that plan after many customers complained.

You'll find those articles below, along with news of the re-opening of the Bloor Cinema and two great listings.

Google slowly but surely charts undiscovered Toronto

There are roughly 2,400 laneways in Toronto - some with names and others without - and many more unmarked footpaths, trails and other publicly accessible cut-throughs that don't appear on most official maps.

In many cases these shortcuts and secret routes are only recorded in memory and discovered by chance, not through online searches.

Direct Energy scraps controversial new contracts amid customer uproar

Direct Energy has pulled the plug on controversial plans to charge buyout fees to customers who cancel water heater rental contracts.

The company confirmed there won't be any changes to its water heater contracts, "at this time," after backlash from angry customers opposed to the new terms and conditions.

The decision was announced Thursday by senior vice president of Canadian Services Rob Comstock, who apologized "wholeheartedly," for the brouhaha and confusion.

After a full renovation, the newly renamed Bloor Hot Docs theatre is open for business again.

While Hot Docs runs from April 26 to May 6 (tickets went on sale March 16), the theatre has a full slate of films all year round. They're mostly documentaries, with some cult films including several by Roger Corman and Monty Python. Above, Being Elmo.

Toronto island airport tunnel will make a good thing even better

The island airport is such a success and such an obvious asset for the city that it is hard to believe that someone once ran for mayor on resisting it.

In 2003, David Miller campaigned on a pledge to stop the construction of a bridge from the mainland to the airport. He won, city council pulled its support for the bridge, and air travellers have been riding the short-hop ferry to the airport ever since.

Market News

Greater Toronto REALTORS® reported 7,032 sales in February 2012 - up 16 per cent compared to February 2011. New listings were also up over the same period, but by a lesser 11 per cent to 12,684. It is important to note that 2012 is a leap year, with one more day in February.

Over the first 28 days of February, sales and new listings were up by ten per cent and six per cent respectively.

"With slightly more than two months of inventory in the Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) market area, on average, it is not surprising that competition between buyers has exerted very strong upward pressure on the average selling price. Price growth will continue to be very strong until the market becomes better supplied," said Toronto Real Estate Board President Richard Silver.
