February 2012

Welcome to our newsletter for February 2012!

We've got some interesting articles below! The Star's Christopher Hume reviews the Bohemian Embassy, we have a photo essay that includes images of Liberty Village from the 40s to the 90s and an article that helps illustrate why you always want to get a home inspection when buying a house.

You'll also find information about a new member to our team, a great rental in a new condo on Sudbury and more.

Never buy a house without a home inspection

Ontario's hot housing market continues to spark bidding wars and, in many cases, buyers are being advised by agents to make "clean" offers to get the house they want.

By "clean", the agent means an offer without any conditions in order to make it more acceptable to the seller. Big mistake. I constantly hear stories from 'successful' home buyers, who bought without an inspection.

They later uncovered major problems, many of which could have been identified with a proper inspection. This meant large repair bills and unfortunate lawsuits involving unhappy buyers, sellers and real estate agents.

What Liberty Village looked like before the condos

For all the development that's shaped Liberty Village over the last decade or so, the area's industrial past retains something of a ghostly presence - at least if one confines himself to exploring the western half of the neighbourhood.

The eastern end, leading in across the still new-feeling East Liberty Street from Strachan Avenue, on the other hand, remains a source of angst for heritage preservationists who lament this city's near-complete contempt for 19th and early 20th century industrial architecture.

Hume: Queen survives attack of the Condo Monster

Go West Queen West, Young Professional, and you, too, can stake a claim you can call your own. The forces of gentrification, ever at the ready, have paved the way. The condos are going up and the future awaits. It's hardly a surprise an area once scorned and abandoned to the down and out should have become so desirable.

That shift has been the story of Toronto in recent decades and shows no sign of slowing down. Why should it? Who wouldn't want to live in a part of downtown that pretty well sums up what the city, urbanity itself, is all about?
