Happy New Year! There have been a lot of changes along Queen West in the past few weeks, first with the opening of the Loblaws at Queen and Portland, now the opening of CB2 at the corner of Queen and Bathurst. More about that and the great restoration job they've done below.
Winterlicious 2012 starts this week and a number of restaurants in the area are participating, including the Drake, Mildred's Temple Kitchen, Levack Block and Lee. The International Design Show is later this month, and can be a great place for inspiration.

Furniture behemoth Crate & Barrel conquers the Big Bop spot
"The frames are hung, the lamps are lit and the beds are made, all set for CB2's grand opening at Queen and Bathurst Sts. on Saturday.
It's the first international location for American retailer Crate & Barrel's hipper, budget-friendly sister store. And what better spot than the erstwhile home of the iconic Big Bop, the notorious music venue with the garish, peeling purple paint that ruled the corner for more than 20 years, until 2009, hosting jazz artists and raves, as well as at least one fatal shooting?
"The eclecticism of Queen Street West definitely just meshed perfectly with the brand," said Crate & Barrel Canada publicist Cathy Miller. "It really is the kind of neighbourhood that CB2 likes to live in - it's fun, funky, great food, great design."

Interior Design Show in Toronto: Meet six influencers
The Interior Design Show will be at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre from January 26th to January 29th.
The National Post spoke to six people they feel are going to create buzz at the show, including Karim Rashid, who designs for Umbra, Aaron Hoey, who designs for Anthropologie and Michael Bruno (above) who runs the website 1stdibs.com, where "if you offer full price, you get "first dibs" on beautiful things".

CIBC: T.O. tops in economic growth
Toronto's economic growth -- helped along by a booming real estate sector -- has once again topped the chart for Canadian cities, as measured by CIBC. The Canadian Metropolitan Economic Activity Index ranks Canadian cities on various economic growth factors, with the results for the third quarter of 2011 out today. And while Toronto was not ranked first in any specific measure, its overall prominence near the top in most categories left it well above most Canadian cities.

Market Update: TREB's Months of Inventory Indicator/Affordability Point to Continued Price Growth in 2012
TORONTO, January 20, 2012 - Starting with its November 2011 Market Watch publication, the Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) has been publishing a new Months of Inventory (MOI) indicator. MOI shows how long, on average*, it would take to sell all actively listed homes assuming the level of sales remained the same and no additional homes were listed.
When the MOI trends downward, the market is tightening with fewer listings from which buyers can choose. Generally speaking, tightening market conditions translate into more competition between buyers and more upward pressure on the average selling price. Click here for the full article |
