Historical Holiday Hints: 'Tis the Season for Gifts


"There are two kinds of people looking for Christmas gifts," the Telegram noted 80 years ago. "Those who know what they want and those who don't, and they both seem to be in difficulty."

Top 5 Simple Holiday Tablescape Ideas

 

 

 

A table setting is something that I am rarely able to spend time perfecting during the holidays. Getting caught up in planning menus, cleaning the house from top to bottom and shopping for gifts for the entire family - something's gotta give. Although I am constantly inspired by the fabulous and festive tablescapes that I find online or in magazines, my energy has usually fizzled out by the time the food is ready to be served.

 

By that point, the last thing on my mind is figuring out how to decorate the table, and I'm sure I'm not alone. Wouldn't it be wonderful if your guests showed up and the dining table was perfectly set up, the centerpiece of your room? I've come to realize that it's not all that difficult to make this happen. Of course it would take some planning, but frankly, a few simple touches here and there and we could all have the look we've been dreaming of, for our next dinner party...

Toronto's Lost Movie Theatres

 

 

 

Putting together a comprehensive photo survey of Toronto's lost movie theatres would be a rather laborious task given how many have come and gone over the years.

 

But insofar as I came across a number of heart-wrenching images of Toronto's cinematic heritage in the course of putting together our series of decade-by-decade photo posts, I thought it worth spending a little time searching out a few more so as to offer at least a decent glimpse back at a style of building that's slowly becoming extinct.

Market Update

Greater Toronto REALTORS® reported 2,699 transactions through the TorontoMLS® system during the first 14 days of December. This result was 11 per cent above the number of transactions recorded during the same period in 2010. On a year-to-date basis, sales amounted to 87,407 - up 4.3 per cent compared to 2010.

"We have had the second best year on record for transactions under the current Toronto Real Estate Board boundaries. Households have continued to take advantage of affordable home ownership options across the diverse array of housing types available in the Greater Toronto Area," said TREB President Richard Silver. The average selling price during the first two weeks of December 2011 was $460,967 - up six per cent in comparison to December 2010.
