July 2011

Welcome to our newsletter for July 2011!

The weather is hot, but the market is hotter - sales for the first half of July were 35% higher than this time last year!

Movies are usually enjoyed in a darkened theatre, but there are a number of outdoor screenings this summer, many of them free. A link can be found below.

The Bank of Canada recently announced that they were holding interest rates steady, but will likely be going up soon. Click here for the article.

Have a wonderful summer!

Pet licences, business permits next in City Hall cost-cutting line

Scrapping licences for cats and dogs, scaling back business permits and reducing by-law enforcement are the latest money-saving options served up by the consultants looking to separate the meat from the gravy at Toronto City Hall.

The cost-cutting suggestions are contained in the fifth instalment of a review of the city's core services obtained exclusively by The Globe and Mail. The latest report seizes on opportunities within Municipal Licensing and Standards Division, responsible for certifying everything from body-rub parlours to barber shops, plumbers to pawnbrokers at a $21.5-million cost to the city.

Free outdoor film screenings in Toronto summer 2011

Free outdoor film screenings mean that Toronto cinephiles can spend their summer evenings basking in the warm bluish glow from a movie screen with blankets and ice cream! Now a yearly tradition, the number of screenings and locations that have full programming have ballooned to the point that it is entirely possible to see about 3 free films per week if one was so inclined. With each location offering a different type of program, I've broken the offerings down by interest. Listed in no particular order, below are the summer line-ups for Yonge & Dundas Square, Harbourfront, TIFF in the Park and more.

Market News

Toronto, July 18, 2011 - During the first 14 days of July, Greater Toronto REALTORS® reported an increase in sales and the average selling price compared to the first two weeks of July 2010. The number of sales through the TorontoMLS® system was up 35 per cent to 3,609, compared to 2,672 last year.

"Low mortgage rates, rising incomes and good news on the jobs front have kept consumers confident in purchasing a home in the Greater Toronto Area. In fact, home buyers are much more confident than they were this time last year when concerns around the HST, interest rate hikes and new mortgage lending rules had temporarily put a damper on home sales," said Toronto Real Estate Board (TREB) President Richard Silver.

Tight market conditions in the GTA drove a strong rate of price growth through the first two weeks July. The average selling price was $464,277 - up 9.6 per cent compared to the average of $423,773 in July 2010.
