Welcome to our newsletter for May 2011!

April 2010 sales in Toronto set records, so when you read that sales in April 2011 were down 17%, please keep that in mind! Also note that the average price of a home across the GTA has gone up 9% since last April.

The Farmer's Market is now open in Trinity Bellwoods park, every Tuesday from 3-7pm. It's a great opportunity to get fresh produce straight from the farm.

Torontonians are willing to pay the price for condo lifestyle

Torontonians enjoy the perks of condo life and say it is important for them to have attractive interior design, be close to public transit and entertainment and have amenities like a gym, pool or party room.  According to the 2011 TD Canada Trust Condo Poll, which surveyed Canadians who are thinking of buying, or recently bought a condo, Torontonians are willing to pay the highest condo fees for these perks. In fact, nearly half of Torontonians are willing to pay more than $400 per month in condo fees (46% versus only 22% across other cities surveyed).

While they are willing to pay for the perks of the condo lifestyle, condo fees could hold Torontonians back in their plans to eventually own a house.  The majority of Toronto condo buyers plan to move within the next six years (54%); in fact, 15% plan to move in the next three years.  Four-in-ten say if they had more money, they would buy a house rather than a condo (42%).

Nostalgia Tripping: Sunnyside Amusement Park

At the foot of Roncesvalles Avenue today eight lanes of traffic roar in close proximity to Sunnyside Beach, but merely 50 years ago, Torontonians would flock to what was then the city's favourite summer playground, affectionately dubbed "the poor man's Riviera."

According to Mike Filey's I Remember Sunnyside: the Rise and Fall of a Magical Era, Sunnyside Amusement Park first opened in last 1922. The idea for a lakeside attraction can be traced back to Charles Phillips, who in 1911 applied for a permission to the Toronto Harbour Commission to operate an amusement device on the shore of the Humber Bay. THC was created the same year in order to redevelop and revitalize the waterfront (a project that's yet to be completed today).

Doors Open Toronto:
May 28 and 29

Doors Open returns to Toronto on Saturday May 27th and Sunday May 28.

It's a good opportunity to visit buildings not normally open to the public.

Above is 401 Richmond Street West, a heritage designated industrial building that was originally constructed for the Macdonald Manufacturing Company from 1899 - 1923. The building is now home to over 140 artists, cultural producers, and micro-enterprises.

The original character and architectural features of the building have been preserved (including over 800 double-hung wood frame windows) while adding more modern and green elements like a 6,500 square foot roof garden and interior courtyard.

Fewer sales help drive home prices up in Toronto

Existing home sales in the Toronto market are down by 17 per cent in April from a year earlier, according to figures released by the Toronto Real Estate Board Wednesday.

The board reported 9,041 existing home sales in April, compared with 10,898 in 2010.

However, because last April was an all time record, this year's figures are in line with average April sales over the last five years, according to the board.
