Claim up to $1,350 in tax relief on home improvements made before February
1, 2010

Let the renovations begin! The federal government's proposed
new Home Renovation Tax Credit (HRTC) allows Canadian homeowners to claim a
non-refundable tax credit of up to $1,350 on eligible expenses incurred for
work performed, or goods acquired before February 1, 2010.
Plan your renovations now so you can meet the deadline!
The one-time HRTC is based on eligible expenses that total
more than $1,000 but not more than $10,000 and is claimed on the 2009 income
tax and benefit return. If you've been putting off replacing that new roof or
septic system because of the economic downturn, the HRTC could be just the
incentive you need to get started.
The HRTC was introduced in the federal government's Economic
Action Plan to provide a timely stimulus to the Canadian economy.

Making your renovations pay
off
A few years after moving into their single-family home, Trish McMahon and
her husband decided the time had come to renovate.
They began by putting a two-storey addition on the back of the house, with a
roomy master bedroom on the upper level, that included an ensuite bathroom and
a walk-in closet.
On the main floor they built a family room, giving them a bit of extra space
for their growing clan (they have a 2 1/2-year-old and a baby on the way).
The following year they finished the basement, adding a bathroom, laundry room
and more storage space.
