Do Something Good With That Discarded Christmas Tree

King/Shaw

By Chantal Eustace, provided by canada.com

Here's a step-by-step guide to winding down your Christmas festivities and ramping up the new year in a green way.

Sort of like making a list, checking it twice, then putting it in the recycling bin.

The Tree

If you bought a real tree this year -- and make sure you water it -- don't trash it after the holiday, says Arthur Loewen, a spokesman for the Canadian Christmas Tree Growers Association.

"I'd hate to see trees go to landfills," says Loewen, owner of Pine Meadows Tree Farm in Chilliwack. He sells about 6,000 trees each Christmas. "We encourage people not to throw them out."

Just don't use tinsel or fire retardant on your tree, since they make it impossible for it to be chipped and composted, Treuer points out.

"Tinsel that is more than 15 years old will likely have lead content in it, so it not only can't be recycled, it is toxic when dumped," he says.

So you don't celebrate Christmas?

King/Shaw

It's not uncommon for those of us who celebrate Christmas to wonder how Christmas Eve is spent for those that don't.

My Jewish friends laugh and say it's tradition to go out for Chinese food and then to a movie.

And now that tradition is official:

The JCC at Bloor and Spadina is offering a catered Kosher Chinese dinner followed by a screening of Vicky Cristina Barcelona. $40 in advance gets you both the dinner and the show.
