Decorating Your Dining Room

By Diana Cina, hgtv.ca
With so many elements involved in decorating your dining room, the tasks of
picking out furniture, colours, fabrics and flooring can be quite daunting -
even when you have a signature style. The best way to approach any large home
decor project is to break down the work involved piece by piece.
If you have a clear idea as to how you want your dining room to look, you're
already ahead of the game. But make sure you have considered some of these
major aspects.
Petite Problems
Don't despair! There are lots of great ideas to make dining room look bigger and
be perfectly functional.
- Add a large mirror to one
side of the room. This gives the illusion of greater depth while also
adding a fabulous decor element.
- Purchase a table with side
panels that can easily fold under the table when not in use and fold up
when you have extra guests for dinner.
- Do not purchase oversized or
grandiose items. Depending on the piece, it can actually make the room
look smaller and awkward. Make sure that all accessories in the room are
proportionate to the main focus, being the table and chairs.
- Avoid clutter. Less is always
more in a small space but when you add guests to the mix, the dining room
can look and feel too tight for comfort.

How to Survive the Holidays (Without Packing on Pounds)
By Michael O'Shea, PARADE Magazine
Your to-do list this holiday season probably includes family gatherings and
last-minute shopping, festive meals and baking, office parties and school
pageants. Chances are the only thing not on that long list is staying fit. This
time of year is known as the Diet Danger Zone. You get too busy to fit in your
regular workouts, and who wants to count calories at parties? The temptation is
to give up and give in. But instead of carelessly packing on the pounds, you
can concentrate on maintenance. Think how much better you'll feel in January if
you pay attention right now! Here's how to start:
Be Flexible. Instead of throwing in the towel because
you can't do a full-hour workout, remember that half an hour or even a few
10-minute breaks throughout the day is better than nothing. Small exercise
sessions also will help you combat holiday stress and sleep better-both
essential to enjoying the season. Click here for more

Preparing a Winter Emergency Kit for Your Car
It's not something we like to think about it, but with the amount of snow we were hit with last year, it makes sense to be prepared. The Canadian Automobile Association recommends keeping emergency items in your vehicle. The following items should be included: First-aid kit and manual Bottled water Emergency food pack containing non-perishable high energy foods, such as granola bars, raisins and peanut butter Seatbelt cutter (strong scissors) Blanket (special 'survival' blankets are best) Fire extinguisher (5 lb. type ABC) In the trunk of your car: Shovel Sand, salt or kitty litter (for traction) Traction mats Tow chain Compass Cloth or roll of paper towels Warning light or road flares Extra clothing and footwear Axe or hatchet Tire repair kit and pump Booster cables Ice scraper and brush Road maps

Resale Housing Market Continues to Reflect Economic Times
TORONTO, November 5, 2008 --
The Greater Toronto Area resale housing market reported 5,155 sales in October,
Toronto Real Estate Board President Maureen O'Neill announced today.
This represents a 35 per cent decline from the 7,915 sales
reported in October 2007 and a 25 per cent decrease from the 6,876 transactions
that took place during the same period two years ago.
In the City of Toronto, there were 2,136 sales, with sales
activity down 38 per cent from the 3,455 transactions recorded last October.
In the 905 Region 3,019 sales were recorded, with sales activity
down 32 per cent from a year ago when 4,460 homes changed hands.
With 68,570 transactions to date this year, sales are within
16 per cent of the 81,563 transactions noted a year ago. The 2007 market referred
to was a record breaking year with each month breaking records for the entire
year. Putting into perspective 2008 figures are indicative of a return to a
more balanced market.
