10 kitchen storage solutions

kitchen storage

Unless you're one of those rare people who can actually reduce what they have to fit the space, or have enough space for what they have, storage is always at a premium. Here, HGTV gives you ten tips for maximizing your kitchen storage

Common Place

Wooden trays can help you stay organized by grouping all the things you need to do a specific task in one easy to find spot. One tray can house your baking essentials such as recipe box, cookie cutters and spatulas, while another can be dedicated to cocktail accessories such as shakers and swizzle sticks.

Short Stack

Replacing your stand-alone range with a wall oven and counter cooktop could free up your kitchen floors for additional storage. Mounting smaller appliances such as microwaves and coffee makers under cabinets is another great space-saving solution.

5 Tips for Growing Herbs Indoors

Sleep

One of the most gratifying ways to eat organic herbs is to grow them yourself. This is all fine and good for the summer months, but it's not all that helpful when the weather starts turning colder.
Luckily for you, growing herbs indoors is not at all impossible. You simply have to know how to go about doing it the right way.

Here are some tips for growing herbs indoors that should help you out if you dare to try it out this fall and winter.

1.    Not all herbs grow indoors. Don't try to force the growth of an herb indoors that simply isn't mean to be grown indoors. The best herbs for being grown inside are: geranium, bay leaf, thyme, chives, garlic, oregano, rosemary, mint, and parsley. Focus on growing herbs that easily grown indoors.

2.    If you're starting with brand new seeds, make sure they have low light at the beginning of their growth.

3.    Plant growth slows in the cold months. Only water when the surface soil is dry.

4.    Fertilize with a fish emulsion about once a month.

5.    Help the air circulation for the plants you're growing by placing a fan in their growing room.
Preparing Your Pets for Winter

Humane Society Expert Offers Tips for a Happy, Healthy Pet

King/Shaw

As temperatures lower in autumn, all animals prepare to stay warm. But before pet owners give in to their instincts and curl up by the first fires of the season, one animal expert advises that they remember to care for Fido and friends.

"People put dogs outside in the winter because they think dogs enjoy themselves, but most dogs want to spend time with people," said Nancy Peterson, an issues specialist with the Humane Society of the United States. "When they don't, they'll develop behavioral issues. These are the reasons they may have been put outside in the first place."

Peterson said vigilance on the part of the pet owner is paramount to pets' safety. She recommends knowing the signs of hypothermia, which include shivering, pale or blue gums, enlarged pupils, a decreased heart rate, and a body temperature below 95 degrees Fahrenheit.
