July 2008
Greetings!

Welcome to our July newsletter!

The big news this month is that our new website has officially launched! Check it out to see the hottest neighbourhood listings as well as other information as helpful links including Ontario Parks, and Premier Spas of Ontario.

When you're living in a condo, you're limited with what you can do to your balcony, but I've included an article to help you beautify your outdoor space and make it uniquely yours. And once that's done, you can enjoy a 'green' cocktail party!

We value your comments and welcome any ideas or requests you may have for future issues.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.
Transform a Concrete Balcony

Concrete Balcony

Question

How can I turn my boring concrete balcony into a welcoming and beautiful area?

Answer

So glad that you asked! Plenty more high-rise dwellers are asking that same question.

The short answer is to consider all of the wonderful alternatives that you have with containers. There are many beautiful wooden, clay, rustic metal, and other containers available. To get your creative juices flowing, look over the selection that is available at your local full service garden centre.

Before you buy containers, consider the following questions: What do you want your balcony space to do for you? Are you looking for colour, or edible plants? Do you want to create a cool shaded place to entertain friends or a quiet space to read or eat a meal from time to time? At what time of day does the balcony receive sunshine? Do you want to attract birds? Do you want the balcony to act as the garden that you enjoy from indoors all year round? In which case, you will have to consider permanent containers and winter hardy plant material. Evergreens can play a big role in the balcony 'winter garden'.

Throw a 'Green' Cocktail Party!

Lemon Drop

With the summer party season in full swing, it's not hard to keep the cocktails green, and not in a St. Patrick's Day kind of way.

At the LCBO, in addition to several dozen organic wines, you can find organic beer (Mill Street) and organic vodka (Square One,). But the real problem is the mixers. However, it's not hard to find organic produce and make your own.

If that's a little much, you can make your own soda water and pop with this handy gadget - the Soda Club Fountain Jet.

Classic Lemon Drop Martini
4 fluid ounces fresh lemon juice
2 fluid ounces Square One (or other organic) vodka
1 teaspoon white sugar
crushed ice
1 lemon, sliced
4 sprigs fresh mint

Market News

Toronto Real Estate Board

REB Members reported 8,600 sales in June, TREB President Maureen O'Neill announced today.

"Sales were down 18 per cent from the 2007 total of 10,451, which was the best performance ever for that month," noted the president. "Nevertheless, the 8,600 figure is the fifth best June on record, and indicative of an active, healthy market."

Sales within the City of Toronto totaled 3,481, down 18 per cent from the 4,238 recorded in June 2007. Sales within the 905 suburbs, at 5,119, were also down 18 per cent from the 6,213 recorded during the same period last year. On the pricing front, June's GTA average came in at $395,866. This was up four per cent over the $381,963 recorded during June of 2007. Prices increases were roughly equivalent in both the City of Toronto and the surrounding suburbs. Within Toronto, prices averaged $433,082, up three per cent over the $421,139 recorded in June of 2007.
