What Does IT Take?Competition & Performance
Performing and competing are goals that a number of our students achieve. Do they have extraordinary talent, musical background or previous experience? Not at all - they just decide that they want to achieve this goal and commit to achieving it. As teachers, we always set goals for our students by discussing what they would like to accomplish with their program. It could be anything from learning to dance for a wedding, social events, a fun hobby or interest, exercise, stress relief etc.. Some people like to challenge themselves with goals that involve a higher level of study. So let's see what's involved.
Ballroom Competition has three divisions: Professional, Pro-Am and Amateur Couple. A Pro-Am couple means that one is a professional and the other partner is a student - just like "Dancing with the Stars Show".
At the Pro/Am and Amateur Couple levels there are further divisions: Newcomer, Bronze I, II, III and Full Bronze, Silver I, II III and Full Silver, Gold, Gold Bar and Gold Star. At these levels there are Closed and Open Divisions as well. In the Closed divisions only figures from the level are allowed. In Open divisions, which is more competitive, you can dance figures from categories above your level and some open choreography.
In addition to the division of levels there are age categories in which the student enters. In other words, a student who is 45 will not compete against another student who is 25. We also decide which dances in which to enter our students.
This is just the beginning. There are Scholarship Divisions and Championship Divisions in which students can eventually enter with their instructor or as a student couple. Again, this is more competitive and usually involves the more experienced students.
So What Does It Take? Commitment to take your lessons and focus on the dance program your teacher suggests for you. We have to have clear goals to know what we are going to achieve. Then decide with your teacher that you are going to do this and DO IT! The only difference between you and others who have gone before you is that they took the chance, made the commitment and followed through. No matter how far you get, you will be a much better dancer for just the journey and experience! With dedication and belief in yourself you will be surprised at what you will achieve.
You too can get out there and show your stuff! |

You can have anything you want if you want it badly enough. You can be anything you want to be, do anything you set out to accomplish if you hold to that desire with singleness of purpose.
