Students at Canisius College held their annual all night event to raise money for cancer research. Iacono Ballroom Center was there for the second year in a row to contribute to the evening by giving the students a fun and energetic Latin lesson!

In 2008 Iacono Ballroom Center donated over $5000 in goods and services to a variety of organizations throughout Western New York helping our community.

Dancing At Weddings:
What To Learn? 617

The season for weddings is upon us; very often this sends shudders up most people's spines just thinking about sitting again all night while the music plays and wishing that we knew just a a few dance steps so that we could get out on the dance floor and have some fun!  I frequently hear this scenario - it is an experience such as this that motivates people to finally decide to take up dance instruction - no matter how frightening the concept might be.

Whether you are getting married or attending a wedding there are some common dances that you will be sure to hear: Fox Trot, Swing and Hustle (Disco).  Michael Buble has been very influential in bringing back old classics previously performed by Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole. Swing, of course, spans the decades from the 1930's to present day artists such as "Big Bad Voodo Daddy" and, Hustle is still a hit at most social venues. Artists such as the Bee Gees, Michael Jackson, Donna Summer and many others bring back memories of John Travolta dancing in Saturday Night Fever.

If you have taken our Beginner I or II classes in Ballroom and Rhythm you have the basics to dance at any of these social events.  Here are some combinations that you can dance as a refresher to our beginner courses:

Fox Trot:
Box Step (2 x's)
Promenade Walk
Promenade Walk with Lady's UAT
Swing Chasse
Box Step with UAT

Swing:
Closed Basic 2 x's
Lady's UAT right from closed to open.
Lady' UAT left
Man's change of hands behind the back
Lady's UAT left

Closed Basic
Swing Release to double hand hold
Basic Cuddle
Lady's UAT left
Closed Basic

Hustle:
Two right Turning Basics
Alternating UAT's Lady/Man/Lady
Turning Basic
Cuddle on Right & Left side
Lady's UAT Left

NOTE:  UAT stands for Under Arm Turn

Of course there are many patterns that you can use,  but these are the basics that you can start with very early on. You will have a great time participating in the dancing and be the envy of those who are watching!  I guarantee it - ENJOY!
