"Latin Action!"
"Latin Action" - a free and sexy movement of the hips - really adds the steam to those hot Latin dances: Salsa, Merengue, Rumba, and Cha Cha! Including just some of this hip movement into your dance style will increase the exercise benefits and make you feel even better about yourself. "Whole body movement" will also cultivate the passion and beauty of your human spirit by helping you express yourself more fully through dance. Getting more "Latin Action" into your dancing involves five basic elements.
1. Lateral Movement
2. Rotational Movement
3. Compression
4. Contraction
5. Stretching
All involve using the core, and being able to feel and control the movement with the abdominal and back muscles. In the beginning you may have to "find the muscles" that control this action. Here are some simple tips that are a fun and easy way to get started:
- Stand in 1st position (feet together, heels closed and toes apart about an inch or two).
- Pretend that your feet are glued to the floor and you cannot raise your heels.
- Keeping your back straight and shoulders level bend only the right knee. The left leg should remain straight.
- Now bend the left knee and straighten the right knee.
You'll miraculously see those hips move side to side-it's impossible for them to stay in place! The degree of action is not important, just the fact that you are now moving those hips that you thought couldn't move!
The rotational element comes next. Be careful when beginning this because some people may not have a great deal of flexibility in their lower back. You can always improve your flexibility; just take it slowly. Start with the moves from above. Once your hips are moving from side to side, gently rotate the isolated hip toward the heel of the straight leg. You'll feel a whole new level of freedom and excitement.
This exercise is especially fun to do with a partner. Stand opposite each other in dance position, as you would for a Latin dance, but leave a little more space between yourselves or you'll be knocking knees together - ouch! As you're moving, look down and you should see what looks like the same side bending with both of you.
Practice your "Latin Action" by yourself or with your partner and dance friends, and you'll see and feel your Latin dancing come to life! An Interview with Dr. JoAnne Cobler,
The Cardiologist who Dances What She Preaches!

In February our minds often turn to hearts and love. Although romantic love is what most people think of, there is also the love of our friends, children and, not to be forgotten, the love of ourselves. We need to love ourselves enough to care about our physical health, and also nurture our mental and emotional wellness. I turned to top female cardiologist, Dr. JoAnne Cobler, for words of advice on how ballroom dancing is directly related to heart health and maintaining quality of life. Here is someone who lives...and dances...what she preaches to her patients!
Dr. Cobler is Director of Cardiac Rehabilitation at Buffalo Cardiology & Pulmonary Associates, a Board Member of the American Heart Association, Chairperson for the "Go Red for Women Campaign", mother and competitive ballroom dancer. She started dancing in 1984 while in medical school and first came to the Iacono Ballroom Center in 1991. JoAnne started in social dance and now studies competitive International Style dancing for performance and competition, most recently performing with her instructor, Phoxay Bouthsavong, at the American Heart Association dinner on January 24th.
As a cardiologist, she knows that heart disease is the leading cause of death in women. She is also concerned about the increasing levels of childhood obesity. But she says that making a choice to have an active lifestyle can reduce risk factors and change these statistics.
According to Dr. Cobler, "A healthy heart is synonymous with a higher quality of life. It means that we can be participants in a fulfilling and enriching lifestyle - staying active and enjoying all the fun and passion that life has to offer. Exercise is extremely important and can help condition the heart. It also helps people lose weight, which reduces blood pressure while lowering cholesterol and blood sugar levels."
There are three areas that are directly related to heart health: DIET, EXERCISE and STRESS REDUCTION. When people change their lifestyle to be more active, eat right and reduce stress they can significantly reduce their risk factors of high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, diabetes and obesity. Diet is something that many people can learn to control. Exercise is where they often fall short because they fail to find an activity they can stick with long-term and enjoy.
"Ballroom Dancing is an excellent form of exercise and stress reduction," said Dr. Cobler. "When people are dancing and enjoying themselves they don't even realize they're exercising. Dance contributes to physical and mental health because it also provides socialization. When you're involved in ballroom dancing you develop a network of friends who like to dance as well...it's a great stress reliever."
Concludes Dr. Cobler, "Dancing has provided me with an enriching and passionate activity I love, that also helps reduce stress and enriches my life. I would advise anyone who thinks they can't dance to just try it. It's never too late to learn and get on the road to a healthier lifestyle."
