Message from the President
Did you know that finding just 10 minutes in your busy day to get active can make a difference in your health? Getting active might be easier than you think if you find a way to sneak it in!
We are so excited to celebrate ParticipACTION's first-ever Sneak It In Week, happening April 9 to 13. We'll be wearing our sneakers to work all week long so we can sneak in short amounts of physical activity during the day. Why don't you join us? Consider parking a 10-minute walk from the office, booking a conference room for a quick yoga session or "power shopping" while you run errands. You'll be rewarded with a longer, happier, more fulfilling life.
Warmly,
Kelly |

Inspiring Words from our Active Living Ambassador
Helping Kids Reduce Sedentary Time

Sedentary time is time when one is doing very little movement. Some examples are sitting for long periods, using motorized transportation, watching TV or playing video games. There are many ways parents can help their children get more physical activity and break up periods of sedentary time:
- Think ACTIVE transportation
- Think ACTIVE play
- Think ACTIVE family time
For more information on how to break up periods of sedentary time read, the full Helping Kids Reduce Sedentary Time piece on our blog!

Physical Activity News for Everyone
New Commercial Features an Inspirational ParticipACTION Success Story
ParticipACTION, together with Coca-Cola Canada, supports teens to inspire each other to get active through the Sogo Active program. Designed to empower youth, and provide them with the resources to get a great physical activity idea up and running, Sogo Active has made a difference in the lives of more than 30,000 Canadian teens.
Now one of the Sogo Active Success Stories is being featured in a new Coca-Cola Live Positively campaign that challenges Canadians to get involved and help make a positive difference in Canada.
Watch for television and cinema advertising as well as a three-minute, documentary-style web-video that follows the story of Mackenzie, a Canadian teen who was motivated to get active through an innovative Sogo Active breakdancing program held at the St. Stephen's Community House in downtown Toronto's Kensington Market neighbourhood.
The after-school, teen break-dance program was designed to reach young people who are not typically team sport players, but still need to find their own way to move, and to feel great about learning new skills. Through financial support from Sogo Active, instructors were hired to teach the class. The classes drew in a crowd, and the program - and the teens - are still going strong.
To be one of the first to see the inspirational three-minute video, go to ParticipACTION's YouTube Channel or www.livepositively.ca. |
Lifestyle Tips

Physical Activity and Sedentary Behaviour in the Early Years
Little kids seem to have plenty of energy (just ask anyone who has a young child to keep up with!) But that doesn't mean they're getting enough physical activity. In order to get a healthy start in life, children four and under need to move more and sit less. Unfortunately, research shows that many kids are on the path to inactivity before they even begin school. Kids need the time and opportunity to learn how to move so they can grow and develop to their fullest.

Success Stories
Norman Cook Junior Public School Encourages Students to Dance and Step to the Beat
ParticipACTION received a wonderful success story from Norman Cook Junior Public School. The school held a Danceathon this past winter, and with some support from ParticipACTION, coordinated a step challenge to try to meet Canada's Physical Activity Guidelines for Children and Youth, which recommend at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day. The event was a huge success, and by the end of the day, everyone who participated was exhausted!
"But it was worth it," says Ying, a volunteer for the Norman Cook Junior Public School Council. "The kids had a fantastic time and did an amazing job raising money for the school. [ParticipACTION's] idea to include a Step Challenge was fantastic."
Ying told us the school had been looking for additional fun ways to incorporate physical activity into the event: "It really motivated the kids to move non-stop! In our 60 minutes of dancing, our step challenge winner had almost 5800 steps!"
A Norman Cook Junior P.S. teacher has already begun planning another step challenge to take place the coming months. Ying and the Norman Cook Junior Public School Council are excited to brainstorm and think of new ways that they can motivate and challenge the kids to keep active.
ParticipACTION was more than happy to help out!
