Message from the President

Sport has been part of human civilization for as long as historians can tell; it has bridged both time and culture, and continues to thrive and develop. And for good reason.

Sport has phenomenal power. It can teach a child confidence and self-awareness. It can bring joy. In defeat, it can give the chance to learn humility and the graceful art of being a good sport. It can carry us through every stage of life. It brings together both friends and strangers. It makes our communities stronger. Sport truly is incredible.

What is also awe-inspiring is how sport can lift us from our sedentary habits and move us, literally, on the field, on the ice, in a diamond, on a pitch, on the court, or in the pool, to become healthier, fitter and happier Canadians.

At ParticipACTION, we are proud to play a leading role in bringing Sports Day in Canada to all Canadians on September 17th. It is a national celebration of sport; cheering on and recognizing every athlete - from those who might be trying a sport for the very first time right up to our most dedicated national team athletes who have devoted their lives to their sport.

If you have not done so already, I urge you to make a plan for September 17th, to grab a friend, or find a team, and take part, like millions of other Canadians who are taking this opportunity to declare their love of sport. See you on the 17th!

Warmly,

Kelly

What Are Our Youth Doing After School?

Tracker ImageGreat news! The kids are heading back to school. But after spending the day in a classroom, what are your kids going to be up to after school this fall? According to the 2011 Active Healthy Kids Canada Report Card, Canadian children and youth are, for the most part, sitting idle indoors during the after-school period.

To help motivate your kids to be more physically active after the dismissal bell rings, ParticipACTION has created an after-school activity guide packed with fun things your kids can do after school that don't involve a computer screen, or sitting still.

Also included in the guide, is an easy-to-use physical activity tracker so your kids can show off how often they are getting the recommended 60 minutes of daily physical activity! Go to our Activity Guide webpage today to download your free copy and get your kids moving more afterschool.

Tell us what you think!

We would love to hear about how your kids stay active, as well as what you think of the After-School Activity Guide and Tracker. We greatly appreciate your time and opinions, and hope you'll participate in following survey.

Two weeks left until the nation celebrates Sports Day in Canada!

This September 17th, join the nation in celebrating Sports Day in Canada! Coordinate an event, festival, open house, try-it day, pep rally or fun run! We're looking for Canadians to share any sporting events that are happening in their communities between September 10 - 17, by registering the sporting events on the Sports Day in Canada website.

Already registered your event? It's not too late to promote it through-out your community! Customize posters and newspaper ads with our easy to use Campaign Creator, available on the Sports Day in Canada website. Print out the materials and post them in and around your community to rally support for your event.

If you have not registered an event, don't worry, there are still other ways to get involved. Search the event database on the Sports Day website to find an event that you can join, or go to watch and cheer on the participants. And don't forget to tune in to the CBC's Sports Day in Canada broadcast, beginning at noon EST on Saturday, September 17th. Go for it, and get in the game!

On September 16th, What Will You be Sporting?

On Friday, September 16th pull out your old team sweater and show your support for sport by wearing it to work, school or out on the town. You'll be joining thousands of other Canadians who will be chucking their regular work wear to slip into something much more comfortable - a favourite team jersey.

Upload your Jersey-clad pictures to the Sports Day in Canada website (www.cbcsports.ca/sportsday)

and your photos could be featured on the CBC Sports Day in Canada television broadcast the following day. Don't pass up this opportunity to do your home-team, or your own team, proud and tell the rest of Canada who you cheer for.

Sogo Active Challenges Teens to get Active This Fall

Sogo ActiveSeptember is a great time for teens to kick off a year of physical activity. Sogo Active wants to remind schools, community groups and youth sports clubs that they can take advantage of micro-grant funding to host a Sogo Active Challenge, where teens can challenge each other to come out, have fun, and get physically active.

The steps are easy to become a Sogo Active Community Host, and once you are registered, applying for a micro-grant is just as easy. Micro-grants can be put towards new sports equipment, a guest "expert instructor" who can turn teens on to a new activity, or to fund an outing to a venue to try something completely different. By involving teens themselves in issuing a challenge to their peers, it ups the ante for participating.

If you are not already registered as a Community Host, go to www.sogoactive.com to get signed up. Once your application is approved, you are ready to create a Sogo Active Challenge. When creating the challenge you will be asked if funding is needed. Click yes, and the website will walk you through the grant application process - all completed online. It's that simple. Now if only getting teens to do their homework was just as easy.

Tips from ParticipACTION's Active Living Ambassador

Don't let the back-to-school routine slow you down!

A change in season may still be weeks away... but for many, a change in routine isn't long off. The start of a new school means many things - from reassuring little ones facing their first days of school, to another year of packing backpacks and school lunches, to the start of fall activities and sadly, the loss of sunlit evenings that make getting outdoors after dinner so inviting and easy.

While many families find it easier to cope when the entire family's on a schedule, many find that homework and after-school and weekend activities make for a calendar so full of commitments, that's there's scarcely time to breathe.

If you find yourself sacrificing your own physical activity time or low on energy as your family adapts to the return-to-school routine, borrow some of these tips!

  • Walk or bike the kids to and/or from school if possible - this adds up to exercise for all. Multitask by walking the dog at the same time.
  • Walk to and/or from work if possible. If this isn't possible, park the car a few blocks from the office or get off public transit a few stops early and walk the rest of the way.
  • Walk for 15-20 minutes every lunch hour and try to take a couple of active ten-minute breaks each day. Instead of heading for a latte, head up and down the stairs or outdoors for a walk in the fresh air.
  • Close your door and do part of an online yoga class in your office (I do this!). Even 10 minutes can leave me feeling limber, energized and in a more positive frame of mind.
  • Start a workplace walking group.
  • Going out for lunch? Select somewhere at least 10 minutes away.
  • When work is done for the day, walk part of the way home.
  • Picking up children at activities or a friend's home? Walk to pick them up and enjoy the walk home together.
  • Try to carve out at least 20-30 minutes to be active as a family after dinner. The exercise will help all family members manage the stress that can occur with a change in routine and sleep better too.
  • Got the kids in bed? Enjoy a walk, follow along with an online yoga or stretch class or stretch while watching the evening news.

Tip! Something I enjoy at this time of year is the change in temperature! It's typically still warm, though not sweltering at this time of year - which makes for more enjoyable runs, power walks, bike rides and other activities.

Get outdoors and enjoy!

Community Health and Built Environment's Easy to Follow Guide Promoting Unstructured Free Play in Your Community

Bad news: the Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute reports that over 90 per cent of Canadian children and youth do not get the recommended daily amount of physical activity needed for good health.

Good news: communities can help children and youth increase their physical activity by making small, inexpensive changes to encourage unstructured free play. The World Health Organization has demonstrated that even modest lifestyle changes, such as increased physical activity and healthier food choices, can encourage significant health improvements and reduce chronic disease.

What is unstructured free play? Free play simply means activities and games that are not heavily structured or supervised such as biking, walking, tag, skipping or playing at the park.

What are the benefits of unstructured free play? Free play contributes significantly to overall physical activity levels, helps develop cognitive and social skills, encourages an active lifestyle, provides active alternatives to sedentary activities such as watching TV or playing computer games, places greater emphasis on physical health and well-being rather than on exercise and weight loss.

How can your community introduce opportunities for unstructured free play? Community Health and Built Environment has produced a concise and easy to follow guide specifically for communities interested in introducing and encouraging unstructured free play. The guide provides a step by step process that is simple and mindful of municipal realities. Click here to view the guide!

Schools Invited to Take the Terry Fox Challenge

Since the Terry Fox Run was founded in 1981, millions of Canadians have moved their bodies in the annual September event to help carry on the work that Terry Fox set out to accomplish; to raise money to find a cure for all cancers. Schoolchildren across the nation take part annually in this non-competitive, volunteer-run event. The 2011 national school-run day is being held on Wednesday, September 28th.

This year, to commemorate the 3,339 miles that Terry ran in his Marathon of Hope, the Terry Fox Foundation is asking educators to launch 3,339 school challenges. A school challenge involves setting a fund-raising goal, which if met, results in the involved teachers or principal taking part in a pre-designated, public performance. Examples include having the principal perform a rap song in the cafeteria, getting shaved bald, or anything that would thrill students to witness, and motivate them to raise money for the run. Creativity is highly encouraged to up the fun factor.

To participate in The Terry Fox Challenge, schools must first be registered for the 2011 National School Run. Schools can then register a Challenge online at www.terryfoxchallenge.org. Any questions can be answered by calling 1-888-836-9786.

Robert Bateman's Get to Know Program

The Robert Bateman Get to Know Program has been inspiring connections between children and the outdoors for over a decade. Acclaimed artist and naturalist Robert Bateman believes that in order to for youth to care about the planet, they must spend time in nature learning about local species and being active outdoors.

Providing youth with opportunities to spend time in nature engaging in outdoor physical activity is a priority of the Get to Know Program. Connecting youth with nature is particularly important in modern society as children continue to abandon outdoor experiences. This detachment from nature results in a sedentary lifestyle which can have disastrous effects on childhood development.

A Get to Know International Unconference will be hosted by Jasper National Park on October 20-23rd, 2011. The Get to Know program would like to invite you to join them as they work together to facilitate an open dialogue about innovative ways to connect youth with nature and physical activity. By bringing together youth, government, businesses, NGO's, and leaders in environmental advocacy, the event will encourage the development of collaborative environmental education and outdoor activity strategies.

For more information on the Get to Know Program or to obtain information on the upcoming Get to Know International Unconference visit the following

website.

Research Update

Get Our Kids in the Game

Recent Canadian statistics show that only an average of 7% of young people are getting the recommended level of 60 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous physical activity per day. Further, fewer Canadian youth aged 15-18 are participating in sport, with the overall participation rates declining from 77% to 59% since 1992.

Engaging our youth to participate in sport can have significant health benefits including; increased participation in vigorous physical activity; increased consumption of fruit and vegetables; and decreased participation in risky sexual behaviours or substance abuse. In addition to physiological benefits, sport participation can help children and youth with social development skills by providing opportunities to build self-confidence, social interaction and integration.

Q & A

Q- I would like to get my children involved in after-school activities, but I am not sure what activity to choose, or how to motivate my kids to want to take part in an extracurricular activity. Any suggestions?

-Gerry

A- Children today are busier than ever at school, and often after a long day our kids just want to go home and veg-out. It's important to get your kids involved in an activity after school that will 1) keep them entertained/interested, 2) keep them active, and 3) keep them safe and out of trouble.

When motivating your kids to get involved in an extracurricular activity after-school, it's important to consider your children's interests. Talk to your kids about their interests - don't assume that what you might have been involved in as a child is what your kids will like, or should be involved in, too. If you child enjoys the activity, he/she is more likely to keep with it and stay motivated to continue involvement in the activity.

As Canada's Physical Activity Guidelines state, our children should be getting at least 60 minutes of physical activity a day. If your child chooses an after-school activity that does not involve being physically active, then why not suggest they walk, bike, or blade, to the activity. Commuting with your child to or from the activity will help ensure that you, as the parent, are getting active as well!

Another thing to consider in choosing, and helping motivate your children to take part in, an after-school activity is safety. It is important to inquire about staff/adult to child ratios as well as staff's professional background before choosing a specific activity for your kids. Choosing an activity that is safe, challenging and where your children gets the attention that they need can in turn keep your children involved in the activity much longer.

Sogo Active Challenge - Macaulay Public School Dance-a-thon a hit!

The Sogo Active Dance-a-thon Challenge held at Macaulay Public School in 2011 was a total success! The grade 8 Sogo Active members at Macaulay organized the event for their peers, as well as for the younger students in grade 6 and 7.The eleven and twelve year old students are very excited about joining Sogo when they are 13. Everyone was able to get active and shake their feet silly! The admission for the dance-a-thon was a "two-nie" plus a donation to the local food bank. Healthy snacks (juice boxes and granola bars) were sold at intermission. The local food bank was very appreciative for the donation of dried and canned food goods that was received. The students raised $210.00 which will be added to Sogo Active's grant of $250.00. These funds will help the school purchase a high jump mat cover that is needed for our track and field program. The participants involve would like to say THANKS TO SOGO ACTIVE FOR HELPING TO SUPPORT THE YOUTH IN BRACEBRIDGE, ONTARIO!
