Message from the President
Happy New Year! What a great time of year it is to make a commitment to health and wellness.
On January 1, ParticipACTION joined with CBC and an advisory board of other leading Canadian health organizations to launch Live Right Now, an unprecedented six-month initiative intended to help change the health of this country.
Live Right Now is a national program supported across CBC Television, CBC Radio and cbc.ca. It's designed to ignite a movement of Canadians to make small, manageable changes that will have a large and lasting effect on their health. Click here to watch a video!
Beginning on January 1, Canadians can:
REGISTER at LiveRightNow.ca - the heart of Live Right Now is an online community where users can create a profile, accept daily challenges, create and join groups, share their experiences, track their success, download recipes, get expert advice, use the body age calculator, etc.
PROPOSE AN IDEA: CBC wants to tell your local health and physical activity success stories across the CBC network. If you have an idea or a story about how you or your organization is getting active and healthy, share it! Please feel free to contact CBC directly at LiveRightNow@cbc.ca, or post your photos and stories on the website.
We wish you an active 2011.
Warmly,
Kelly

The ParticipACTION Partner Network - Building Strength in Numbers
Since the inception of the ParticipACTION Partner Network (PPN) in late 2009, a variety of not-for-profit and public-sector organizations have joined our ranks. The group shares a similar vision - to motivate and encourage Canadians to lead more active, healthy lives. With over 70 organizational members thus far, and with more and more organizations joining every week, the PPN is building strength in numbers.
The PPN is dedicated to those involved in the physical activity, recreation and sport participation sectors. ParticipACTION's belief is that the PPN will not only help support the work of individual member organizations, but will strengthen the physical activity and sport participation sector in Canada.
Membership in the PPN is free and voluntary, and provides organizations with the following benefits:
- Access to desirable and valuable sector information through Partner Forums and free, easy-to-use communications and resource distribution channels
- Membership to the Sport Information Resource Centre (SIRC)
- Access to customizable ParticipACTION Tool Kit materials
For more information on the PPN and how the network can benefit you and your organization, visit the PPN webpage or contact Christa Costas-Bradstreet at ccbradsteet@participACTION.com

The ParticipACTION Tool Kit offers FREE communication and promotional materials
To help inspire and inform Canadians, we've developed the ParticipACTION Tool Kit, which contains free communications materials that organizations can use to promote physical activity and sport participation.
Many of the materials are available to all. And if you are a ParticipACTION Partner Network (PPN) member, you can also access customizable materials.
Feel free to view and download the available materials online at the ParticipACTION Tool Kit webpage. |

Skin Cry
By John N.A. Brown
Within the December issue of our e-newsletter we featured "InActivity", created by John N.A. Brown. "Skin Cry" is another comic strip John has created around the theme of inactivity. His comics look at the worldwide issue of unhealthy living, with the idea that we can better examine ourselves through laughter than through tears.
John is a cartoonist who creates a variety of themed comics and graphic novels. He is also a scientist, an inventor, an encyclopaedist, an amateur athlete, a coach and a life-long martial artist. He lectures on science, human factors and animation, draws all the time and writes little passages about himself.

Research Update

The impact of 'Exergaming' on Physical Activity levels of Children and YouthOnly 12% of children and youth are active enough to meet current physical activity guidelines. One strategy for increasing activity is to substitute active video games (exergaming) for traditional sedentary video games. Recent research looks at the effect of 'exergaming' on children's' physical activity levels and health outcomes. In general, studies showed evidence of increased energy expenditure (EE) and heart rate (HR) in children who participated in active computer and video console games compared to those who play non-active versions of electronic games or who are at rest. Generally, the evidence is indeterminate as to whether exergames produce activity levels that would meet public health recommendations. Further research is required to assess the short- and long-term impacts of exergaming on children's' activity levels. For more information, see our Research File. For tips related to physical activity and exergaming, see our Lifestyle Tips. |
| Q & A
Q- Every year I make a resolution to go to the gym more, but it never seems to stick. Do you have any suggestions? Declan
A- When you're trying to make a behaviour change, it's best to start slow, be realistic and find activities that you actually like to do. The gym is great, but it's not for everyone. There is no need to think that the only way to get active is to commit to boring workouts. Instead, find some fun activities you enjoy and watch the health benefits that follow. Regular physical activity over months and years produces long-term health benefits and reduces the risk of many diseases. Think of physical activity as a gift you're giving yourself.

Fight Diabetes with Urban Poling
As a busy mother of three, Lee-Anne Kennedy finds it challenging to fit workouts into her busy schedule. But as a person with diabetes, she knows that exercise has to be a priority in her life. She's an avid skier, walker and former runner, but her current favourite workout is urban poling, also known as Nordic walking.
"It's so simple to just grab my walking poles and head out the door for a workout," says Kennedy, who is also a nurse and diabetes educator. "Urban poling really helps me keep my blood sugar in a healthy range, and it helps control my weight too."
Using the walking poles properly is the key to getting the benefits, says Kennedy, who lives in Deep River, Ontario. Most people need only one or two lessons to develop good form.
When Margaret Helmuth needs help managing her diabetes, she counts on urban poling, too. She tried brisk walking, but it didn't elevate her heart rate to the level her doctor recommended, and it had only a minor effect on her blood sugar levels.
Then, about two years ago, she found that urban poling offered just what the doctor ordered.
"Walking with poles never fails to bring down my sugar levels," says Helmuth, who lives in Toronto. "And I always reach my target heart rate when I walk with my poles."
For more information on Urban Poling, or to find an instructor in your area, visit the Urban Poling website.
