 Join the ParticipACTION Partner Network
The ParticipACTION Partner Network (PPN) is a robust network of not-for-profit and public-sector organizations dedicated to physical activity and sport participation. ParticipACTION's belief is that the PPN will not only help support the work of individual member organizations, but will strengthen the physical activity and sport participation sector in Canada. The PPN is a formalized mechanism through which:
-
ParticipACTION can marshal resources and deploy these resources to PPN members in support of the delivery of initiatives to address the physical inactivity crisis.
-
PPN members can build a community of practice related to physical activity through collaboration and communication between stakeholders.
-
ParticipACTION can facilitate the coordination of communications and knowledge exchange across Canada, to ensure clarity of message to the general public and to help build capacity of member organizations.

| Research Update | |
How a student gets to and from school can impact his or her physical activity levels overall. Research has shown that children who walk or cycle to school have higher levels of daily physical activity and are more likely to meet physical activity recommendations than children who are driven or take the bus. Factors that are associated with children's active commuting are ethnicity, socio-economic status and parental attitudes. There are also several environmental and social factors noted as potential predictors of children's mode of transportation, including sidewalk infrastructure, traffic safety, accessibility of public transport, urban vs. rural location, weather conditions and parental perceptions of the environment.

| Q&A | |
Q - I'm thin and have never had a problem with my weight. Do I need to be physically active? Sarah
A - The answer is, absolutely yes! Reasons for being physically active go far beyond maintaining a healthy weight. Physical activity appears to reduce the risk of over 25 chronic conditions, including coronary heart disease, stroke, hypertension, breast cancer, colon cancer, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis. In fact, fit individuals who are obese have a lower risk of all-cause mortality than do unfit normal-weight or lean individuals. Fit adults outlive the unfit, regardless of their obesity levels or weight.

I enjoy it! British Columbia From Monday to Friday, I leave the house at 7 a.m. and walk a short distance to Burn's Bogg. I make my way through the bog to the Nordel Overpass and cross over. Then, I go under the overpass and cut through the Great Pacific Forum parking lot and get onto the Alex Fraser Bridge. It takes me 15 minutes to get to the Bridge. Then, it takes another 30 minutes to cross over the Alex Fraser to Annacis Island, where I take the exit and walk under the bridge. From there I walk parallel to the bridge, heading back towards the river. I cut through a small nature park that runs under the bridge and leads to Derwent Way. Then, I walk along Derwent Way to Unisource Canada, which takes another 15 minutes. In total, I walk one hour to get to work and then another hour to get back home. When it rains, I walk 15 minutes to get the bus over the bridge and get off on the other side and then I walk the last 15 minutes to work. And I enjoy it!
